Job Description

The Centre for Environmental Rights (CER) seeks to hire a skilled digital media strategist to assist the Head of Communications in implementing effective internal and external communication digital campaigns that align with our theory of change, navigate a dynamic digital landscape and ensure brand-adaptability.

This role targets a strategic thinker with digital savviness. The candidate must understand various social media platforms and how to use them effectively, knowledge of social media best practices and content management tools, and familiarity with a range of web and digital design applications. The ideal individual thrives in identifying omnichannel digital media opportunities and can distil complex information into curated digital storytelling to promote CER’s strategic objectives.

The Centre for Environmental Rights is a non-profit organisation and law clinic of activist lawyers who work with communities and civil society organisations in South Africa to realise our Constitutional right to a healthy environment by advocating and litigating for environmental justice. Salary

The salary range for the position is between R422 434 - R472 132 (total cost to company). The salary offered will be dependent on qualifications, level of expertise, and experience of the successful candidate. The salary package includes medical aid and pension subsidies.

Roles and Responsibilities
Content Management
  • Manage digital content development and community management on CER’s social media platforms.
  • Work in alignment with the communications and various programmatic teams to develop and execute engaging social media content suitable for various platforms.
  • Develop social media content plans. Update CER’s websites and microsites with relevant information.
  • Assist in creating/drafting media materials like social media posts, newsletters, podcasts, factsheets and infographics. Produce high-quality fact sheets, videos, webinars and images.
  • Increase CER’s social media base through effective and responsive community engagements over different platforms.
Digital Media Strategy
  • Understand how to connect the Centre’s organizational objectives with stakeholder needs.
  • Develop and implement digital marketing strategies aligned with our objectives.
  • Collaborate with programme teams to create engaging digital campaigns across multiple channels.
  • Conduct market research to identify trends and insights, analyse engagement data to refine strategies and ensure strategic and brand alignment.
  • Create creative strategies based on digital personas and stay updated on marketing trends and social media platform changes.
Monitoring & Evaluation Reporting
  • Regularly utilise analytics tools such as Google Analytics, HubSpot, WordPress, MarketIQ and social media analytics to track and report on KPIs, ROI, and overall campaign performance.
  • Use digital tools for campaign management, including Google Ads and social media platforms, to enhance search engine optimisation by conducting keyword research, planning content, and monitoring performance.
  • Assist the Communications Team in developing monthly, quarterly, and annual social media reports.
Internal Communications
  • Contribute to the development and strengthening of CER’s internal communications to foster positive organisational culture; support training staff members in improving social media skills; assist CER in the development of content for internal and external audiences such as newsletters and periodic updates.
Transformation
  • Participate and contribute towards the Centre’s ongoing diversity, inclusion and transformation objectives in communications and media, and support Black and women-owned suppliers and service providers as part of the organisation’s transformation commitments.
Qualifications And Requirements
  • A degree or a relevant qualification in journalism, communications, English, or a related field
  • Minimum of five years of relevant work experience in a similar role
  • Excellent English language skills (written and verbal); proficiency in other South African languages is an advantage
  • Relevant experience and technical proficiency in media communications, digital marketing and social media engagement
  • A clear communicator with strong interpersonal and collaboration skills to work with diverse teams
  • Effective networking and stakeholder engagement abilities and campaign management
  • Strong media relations experience is required
  • Proficient in social media analytics, Google Analytics, content development, digital media reporting, creative suites and design applications, video production and editing, and graphic design software such as Canva
  • Knowledge of HTML/CSS, CMS platforms (WordPress, Shopify) or basic design tools such as Adobe Creative Suite will be highly advantageous
  • Thrives in a fast-paced work environment, well-organised, deadline-driven
  • Must be able to work independently, a self-starter, with attention to detail and a commitment to providing high-quality support and service
  • Must have a genuine passion for social and environmental justice, and a sensitivity to the needs of communities affected by environmental degradation and injustice
  • Available to travel
