Job description
Company Description

Wimmy, based in Cape Town, South Africa, is a specialised consultancy, on a mission to help organisations who want to use their own internal data as well as other external data to inform strategic, operational and clinical decisions. We do this by building data infrastructure, dashboards, machine learning models and AI integrations into our clients’ existing technology. We work with a wide range of health(care) organisations, from For-Profit and Non-Profit Companies to international NGOs, research institutes and occupational health departments of multinational companies.

Role Description

We are looking for a diligent, upbeat data scientist who knows how to get things done. You will be working within a team of other data scientists and data engineers, and you will also communicate with our clients and software developers.

Consider applying if this is you:

You don\'t just do what you are told, you can think outside of the box and come up with innovative solutions to complicated problems. In high school projects, you did most of the work. In the interview, you\'re happy to explain how you crafted the solution that helped your team win the hackathon. You like the fast pace, autonomy and agility that a startup offers. You embrace the opportunities that AI bring, and you\'re excited to make them come alive. You are a self-starter who learns fast and deep. You enjoy coming into the office some days of the week to work shoulder to shoulder with the team. You\'ve done a lot in the past few years and you want to do more, but your current work environment doesn\'t allow you. You set a high bar for the quality of your work, and seeing the client thrive thanks to your work motivates you to keep pushing.

Your main responsibilities
  • To lead the design and execution of statistical analysis plans. The types of analyses and methodologies vary widely from basic descriptive statistics to a range of regression models (e.g. mixed effects models and inverse probability weighting for causal inference) and machine learning models (e.g. random forests and neural networks).
  • Data storytelling: you make sense and give meaning to the data by narrating the results and explaining to the client what implications they have for their day-to-day operations and strategic planning.
  • Code review
  • Support the development of project proposals
  • Present results at client meetings
  • Oversee the writing of technical reports, case studies and scientific papers
  • Support the development of course material related to a wide range of topics in biostatistics and data science
Required Qualifications, Skills & Attributes
  • A Masters or PhD degree in (Bio)Statistics or Data Science
  • A minimum of 4 years work experience as a statistician and/or data scientist
  • Designed and executed study designs and statistical analyses for observational and/or experimental studies in the broad domain of health sciences and healthcare delivery
  • Knowledge of Relational Databases and SQL
  • Proficient in Python (or R)
  • Strong data visualisation skills
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team
  • Experience engaging with clients (scoping, exploring analytical approaches, helping the client understand the results and implications of the analysis)
  • An aptitude for interpreting data in context and business management consulting
  • A value system that is compatible and aligned with ours
  • Excellent organisational and multitasking skills
  • Self-starter with a problem-solving mindset
  • Comfortable in a fast-paced and evolving startup environment
Bonus Points
  • Experience managing a team of data scientists or biostatisticians
  • Having worked for global and multinational clients
  • Experience with cloud-based environments and deployment workflows
