Within the changing tax, financial, regulatory and governance environment the Consultant – Corporate Tax is responsible for ensuring successful delivery in the context of diversifying telco‑to‑techco landscape, constant dynamics and local challenges in the economic, regulatory and legal environments and evolving industry ecosystems, evolving tax landscape and the increased pressure from Revenue Authorities; Opcos are requesting greater expertise and support from the Group on complex tax matters. Responsibilities
  • Corporate Tax Compliance and Reporting: Work with the Tax Accountant for the preparation of the monthly current tax computations, deferred tax computations and effective tax rate for the Head Office entities on the Tax Reporting tool (TRCS). Prepare bi‑annual provisional tax returns, budget tax computations, quarterly tax computations, year‑end current tax computations and deferred tax computations.
  • Controlling foreign companies (CFC) computations relevant to the Head Office entities and liaise with the Opcos for the foreign business establishment (FBE) analysis and application of section 9 D of the South African Income Tax Act.
  • Work with the Finance teams to manage tax payments within statutory timelines and prepare quarterly tax risk registers for the Head Office entities.
  • Support any corporate tax audits and/or enquiries for the Head Office entities, collaborate with the Risk team to address any tax risks that may emanate from corporate tax matters due to regulatory, political or other circumstances.
  • Provide proactive tax input on business projects and requests; partner with finance, legal, and commercial teams to provide input to the tax implications of various transactions, support implementation of tax‑efficient structures, and review Group agreements and contracts to ensure compliance with policy and tax legislation.
  • Tax Governance and Risk Management: Assist with the design and development of MTN framework, policies and procedures for tax risk assessments. Maintain tax governance documentation, process maps and internal controls. Assist with the development/maintenance of the tax risk management policies for the Opcos and the Group. Support internal and external audits and information requests from tax authorities and audits, investigate and resolve tax audit disputes and queries. Ensure effective and efficient tax reporting and contribute to the development of internal tax policies, ensuring alignment with group standards and regulatory expectations.
  • Stakeholder and Advisor Management: Develop a culture of strong collaboration and effective team working. Liaise with external tax advisors, auditors and Revenue Authorities on corporate tax matters. Build strong working relationships with local and regional finance teams. Promote an 'MTN‑centric' and 'partnership approach' to develop strong relationships with other working groups. Provide training to the business units and the Opcos when required. Assist in the design and/or improvements of systems that are relevant to Tax. Assist the Senior Manager to develop and enhance tools and techniques for tax risk identification, measurement and monitoring.
Qualifications
Education
  • Minimum Bachelor's degree in Tax, Accounting, Finance or related field.
  • Postgraduate degree in Tax, Finance and/or equivalent.
  • Relevant professional qualification in Tax (advantageous).
Experience
  • Minimum 5 years corporate tax experience, preferably with the Big 4 audit/advisory firms and/or in‑house.
  • Strong knowledge of South African corporate tax laws.
  • Experience working with external auditors and the South African Revenue Service in relation to corporate tax matters.
  • Experience in tax risk assessment, tax audits, tax advisory and end‑to‑end tax compliance function.
  • Experience in continuous improvement through implementation of best practices (Tax).
  • Experience in effectively managing multiple priorities in a dynamic environment.
  • Working experience in a Group company environment.
