Job Summary

Certification & Compliance Manager (Timber) within the Timber division at Piet Retief, Mpumalanga. This role involves overseeing certification and compliance processes within the Timber division, ensuring adherence to environmental regulations, industry standards, and company policies. The position is responsible for managing SHEQ systems, coordinating audits, maintaining certification status, and driving ESG compliance. Additionally, the role includes managing IMS systems, geospatial data, and stakeholder relationships to support sustainable forestry practices and legal compliance.

Responsibilities and Duties
  • Ensure certification for Timber branches is obtained and maintained.
  • Coordinate internal and external audits, including monthly internal audits.
  • Oversee SHEQ procedures and implement changes based on new certification requirements.
  • Develop, implement, and update policies related to certification.
  • Monitor and evaluate certification status, providing regular reports to senior management.
  • Manage and coordinate the IMS system, ensuring accurate data input and reporting.
  • Ensure IMS system supports certification processes and reflects up-to-date information.
  • Maintain system efficiency and uptime.
  • Review inspection and audit documentation to ensure readiness for certification.
  • Ensure compliance with environmental laws and regulations during certification activities.
  • Provide incident and certification reports to senior management.
  • Implement and monitor control systems to manage risks related to certification processes.
  • Ensure all certification activities comply with regulatory and legal requirements.
  • Continuously update ESG information and set targets aligned with group objectives.
  • Submit annual Timber ESG reports.
  • Manage geospatial data to comply with certification standards.
  • Oversee mapping and legal compliance for suppliers.
  • Update microforest data and assist with legality requestsli>
  • Build and maintain relationships with internal teams, external stakeholders, and certification bodies.
  • Engage in networking opportunities to stay updated on industry best practices and trends.
Qualifications and Skills
  • Grade 12 / Matric.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Management, Forestry, or related field.
  • Certificate in ISO, PEFC, and FSC certification systems (advantageous).
  • 5-7 years in Certification Management.
  • 3-5 years knowledge of environmental regulations and certification standards.
  • 2-3 years Auditor & GIS experience.
  • Experience in a forestry-related industry.
  • Microforest experience (advantageous).
  • Strong sense of responsibility, cultural awareness, trustworthiness, resilience, and adaptability.
  • Innovative, team player with excellent negotiation and stakeholder management skills.
  • In-depth knowledge of environmental and certification regulations/laws.
  • Strategic thinker with strong analytical and problem‑solving abilities.
  • Multilingual (English, Zulu/Swati).
  • Valid driver’s license (Code 08) and valid passport.
