This position, based in De Waterkant / CPT CBD will work closely with directors and associates, gaining hands-on experience in all aspects of family law litigation and advisory work, with the objective of qualifying as an admitted legal practitioner.

Requirements:

  • Completed LLB degree
  • Registrable as a Candidate Legal Practitioner with the Legal Practice Council
  • Valid driver’s license and own vehicle

  • Bilingual proficiency in English and Afrikaans will be an advantage
  • Sound computer literacy (MS Word, Outlook, Excel)
  • High attention to detail and strong organisational skills

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Conduct in-depth research on legislation, case law and legal principles relevant to all family law matters
  • Draft pleadings, affidavits, notices, settlement agreements, parenting plans and correspondence
  • Assist with drafting heads of argument and court-ready documents
  • Assist in High Court and Magistrates’ Court litigation
  • Prepare trial bundles, chronologies, and court files
  • Attend consultations with counsel and assist in briefing
  • Attend client consultations, take instructions and assist with managing client expectations in sensitive and often high-conflict matters
  • Maintain professional, empathetic and ethical client communication
  • Attend court proceedings regularly
  • Appear in the Magistrates’ Court, Regional Court and other lower courts once entitled to a right of appearance
  • Manage and maintain case files and diaries
  • Ensure compliance with court rules, filing deadlines and internal procedures
  • Communicate with correspondents, sheriffs, court officials and counsel
  • Complete compulsory Practical Vocational Training (PVT) / Practical Legal Training (PLT) and comply with all Legal Practice Council requirements
