The Division of Health Systems and Public Health is located within the Department of GlobalHealthin the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences. The Division undertakes a range of undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, research activities and service delivery within theWestern Cape Government, Department ofHealth.

Appointment is on the joint establishment of Stellenbosch University and the Western Cape Government, Department of Health on the conditions of service of the University.

Reporting to the Head of the Division of Health Systems and Public Health, the incumbent's duties will include:

Duties:
  • Providing leadership in developing the fields of occupational medicine, occupational health and public health, including strategic niche areas within these fields.
  • Increasing the output of relevant and high-quality research in occupational medicine and related fields.
  • Overseeing, participating in and growing postgraduate and specialist occupational medicine education and training.
  • Participating in activities of the Colleges of Medicine of South Africa: College of Public Health Medicine: Occupational Medicine.
  • Maintaining and developing Health Professions Council of South Africa accreditation of academic programmes and training platforms.
  • Contributing to undergraduate teaching across health sciences students.
  • Delivering occupational medicine clinical services as required.
  • Providing other occupational health services for the Western Cape Department of Health and Wellness as required.
  • Securing research and training funding to support relevant research, training and service to advance the discipline and to support the service delivery.
  • Engaging with provincial, national and international stakeholders to promote excellence and collaboration.
Requirements:
  • Registration with the HPCSA as Occupational Medicine Specialist.
  • Expertise and experience in occupational medicine, occupational health and public health undergraduate and postgraduate teaching or training.
  • Evidence of research experience and academic and service collaboration.
  • Evidence of working in relevant clinical settings.
  • Experience in mentorship and postgraduate supervision (at least at master’s level).
  • Project management skills, communication as well as networking skills.
Recommendations:
  • PhD in Occupational Medicine or relevant related area, or proof of near completion of a PhD.
  • Excellent track record of initiating and executing research in the fields of occupational medicine and related fields.
  • Experience of successful postgraduate supervision at doctoral level.
  • Track record of publications in high impact journals.
  • Evidence of securing funding.
  • Evidence of national, regional and international recognition of research.
