Research Scientist (Clinical Microbiome) – Quadram Institute Bioscience. Applications are invited for a Research Scientist (Clinical Microbiome) to join the Laboratory of Prof Daniel Figeys in the Microbes and Food Safety programme at Quadram Institute Bioscience (QIB), based in Norwich, UK.

The Quadram Institute is a cutting-edge facility with strategic research programmes in Food, Microbiome and Health, and Microbes and Food Safety. We aim to tackle issues in human health, food, and disease by bringing together diverse researchers, clinicians and industry partners. This role focuses on developing precision microbiome intervention trials to promote healthy aging.

• Identify, plan, carry out and modify experiments to meet project objectives
• Prepare documentation for ethical approval
• Prepare results, reports and manuscripts for publication in leading scientific journals and other relevant media
• Disseminate research findings and establish reputation through national conferences and exhibitions
• Ensure research and record keeping comply with good practice, scientific integrity and local policies
• Contribute to the smooth running of the group, including supervision of visitors to the laboratory and training others
• Strive for excellence, seek feedback and pursue learning and development opportunities
• Enhance the output of the research group by refining existing protocols and assisting with troubleshooting
• Run key items of equipment and provide services, including purchases, maintenance and repairs
• Undertake routine administrative tasks, such as maintenance of laboratory supplies and stocks
• Mentor/supervise less experienced researchers and provide guidance on equipment
• Plan, perform, troubleshoot and analyse experiments; provide preliminary data
• Design and supervise small research projects for students
• Assist in the preparation of research proposals and manuscripts
• Support engagement activities to raise the profile of the Institute
• Contribute to the work of Institute committees as agreed with the line manager
• Any other duties commensurate with the nature of the post

• PhD in Biochemistry, Microbiology, Molecular Biology or relevant fields — Essential

• Experimental microbiology relevant to live microbiome studies — Essential
• Bioinformatic analysis of data — Essential
• Microbiome intervention trials — Desirable
• Metagenomics, metaproteomics, and/or metabolomics — Desirable

• Experience of oral research presentations — Essential
• Experience in microbiome laboratory experiments — Essential
• Experience with preparing documents for ethical approval — Essential
• Preparing data / information for grant proposals — Essential
• Supervision of students and visiting workers — Essential
• Proven record in scientific writing — Essential
• Demonstrated ability to perform research — Essential
