Job description
Rotational Clinical Pharmacist PROPEL Programme (B6 to B7 Progression)

Following significant investment by the Trust we are looking for up to ten Band 6 or Band 7 pharmacists to join our -PROPEL Programme (Plymouth Rotational Opportunity for Progression through Experience & Learning), structured rotational development programme.

Applications are open to current trainee pharmacists, pharmacists in their early years of career, those new to hospital pharmacy with experience in other sectors or with specific visa requirements.

Dependent on your knowledge skills and previous experience you will join as either a Band 6 or Band 7 clinical pharmacists. You will be supported through our training programme and progression pathway which will enable you to develop a portfolio to prepare for advanced clinical practice and Band 8a roles.

This role is for enthusiastic and motivated newly qualified or experienced pharmacists looking to further develop their clinical skills alongside gaining significant teaching, training, leadership, and management experience in order to aid career progression for more senior roles.

Main duties of the job

PROPEL Programme (Plymouth Rotational Opportunity for Progression through Experience & Learning)

Band 6 Rotational Pharmacists:

  • Guaranteed progression to Band 7 role after 18 months (subject to competency milestones)
  • Fully funded Certificate in Clinical Pharmacy- with protected study time
  • Undertake 3-month core rotations including: Mixed Medical Admissions, Mixed Surgical Care, Healthcare of Older People, Generalised Paediatrics, Aseptic Services, Clinical Screening and Medicines Information
  • Work laptop and mobile phone
  • Support and mentoring by experienced pharmacists
  • Relocation packages offered dependent on eligibility

Band 7 Rotational Pharmacists:

  • Ready to apply for Band 8a roles within 18 months
  • Fully funded certificate in Diploma Clinical Pharmacy- with protected study time
  • Undertake 6-month core specialised or optional specialised rotations including: gastroenterology, paediatrics and neonatal medicine, neurology, cardiology, respiratory, microbiology, critical care, urgent & emergency care, clinical trials, cancer services and aseptics, hepatology.
  • Work as part of wider MDT's with involvement in audit, change management, quality improvement projects, supervise others, formulary review and medicines optimisation.
  • Upon completion of diploma fully funded Non Medical Prescribing or other further study e.g. MSc
  • Relocation packages offered dependent on eligibility

Job responsibilities

Participate in the PROPEL programme (UHP rotational development programme), undertaking defined and structured Band 6 core or Band 7 specialist rotations across a variety of different clinical specialities, as defined above.

To participate in all activities of the pharmacy dispensary as required e.g. clinical screening and final accuracy checking of prescriptions.

To participate in ward based clinical pharmacy services to support the safe prescribing and administrations of medicines. This may include activities drug history taking and medicines reconciliation, medicine supply, patient medication consultations, medicines optimisation services, discharge medication service (DMS) and any other activities associated with medicines management.

Perform clinical check of prescription charts for individual patients and ensure safety promoting medicines optimisation communicating any problems and negotiating solutions with doctors and/or ward staff, in the ward or dispensary.

To participate in the production and supply of aseptically dispensed items, whilst working in the aseptic unit.

To provide medication related advice to patients, focussing on medicines stopped/started or changed in hospital and side effects profiles enabling them to obtain the maximum benefit from their medicines

Ensure all relevant documentation is completed and document any actions appropriately in the patients notes and / or electronic patient record.

To facilitate timely medication availability through participation in, and further development of, the existing patients-own drugs and onestop dispensing schemes.

Provide professional responses to medicine information queries from within a clinical service line or designated care area

Work on wards, clinical departments, out-patient clinics and other settings, which may include undertaking non-medical prescribing.

Person Specification
Knowledge and Experience
  • Demonstrable experience of working in Pharmacy upon starting in post e.g. completion of foundation training
  • Demonstrable experience of UK hospital pharmacy
  • Good proven understanding of the role of a UK hospital pharmacist
  • Foundation training year (previously pre-registration) undertaken in secondary care
  • Training in medicines information
  • Good general pharmaceutical & clinical proven knowledge
  • Provision of ward based Clinical Pharmacy Services
  • Demonstrable management experience, including clinical supervision of junior staff
Qualifications
  • 4 year Master's Degree, or equivalent, in Pharmacy followed by 1 year pre-registration training.
  • Current registration with the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC) or pending
  • Working towards Post-Graduate Certificate/ Diploma/MSc in Clinical Pharmacy
  • Further clinical, research or management qualification
  • Proven evidence of Research or project work
  • Current registration with the Royal Pharmaceutical Society (RPS)
  • Member of the United Kingdom Clinical Pharmacy Association (UKCPA)
  • Working towards RPS faculty submission
  • Non-medical prescriber (or working towards NMP qualification) or must be willing to undertake training to qualify as NMP when requested.
