Come and join us to work within a fast developing, dynamic and pioneering Neurodevelopmental (ND) Team across the city of Birmingham, working alongside a range of professionals, including children's therapy, clinical psychology and medical colleagues, education and local authority partners.

We are looking for highly motivated and committed therapists with skills in holistic, client-centred practice, for a post at Band 6.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidates will be offering, evaluating and developing, assessment and support of children with social communication difficulties and profound and multiple difficulties in a multi-disciplinary team. You will offer support to more junior team members and students. You will be trained to use a wide range of standardised assessments as a member of the multi-disciplinary team.

You will have strong clinical and caseload management skills and a passion for working with children with SEND, with a specific interest in the assessment and diagnosis of Autism. You will have proven experience of successfully working with a range of clients, their families and others in order for the child to achieve meaningful outcomes. You will have excellent communication and team working skills. You will be willing to work in a full range of locations across the city of Birmingham, including child development centres, education settings and family homes, as well as undertaking some assessments virtually.

Job responsibilities
  • To identify and plan appropriate SLT intervention including assessment and delivering therapy in groups and one-to-one sessions, in accordance with SLT service agreed packages of care and pathways
  • To provide appropriate treatment and evaluate outcomes with a full range of clients including complex clients.
  • To use highly developed communication skills to explain complex information from clinical assessment and therapy outcomes to clients, carers and multidisciplinary team members.
  • To assess, diagnose and treat children with a range of communication and/or eating and drinking difficulties, making appropriate clinical decisions independently with support for highly complex clients.
  • To make differential diagnosis of specialist and diverse cases with access to supervision for highly complex cases.
  • To record and maintain up-to-date clinical case notes in line with professional standards and Trust, professional and departmental policies.
  • To complete timely, accurate written and electronic records of patients care, maintaining service standards and following departmental clinical record keeping guidelines. The post holder will also be required to input activity into the IT system.
  • To share specialist knowledge with colleagues at a local level including offering additional specialist experience and providing observation sessions for others.
  • To access Highly Specialist Speech and Language Therapists for support such as second opinions for highly complex cases as necessary.
  • To contribute to evaluating and updating packages of care and pathways used within the SLT Service.
  • To Identify and access appropriate Continuous Professional Development at least to a level to meet Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists and Health and Care Professions Council requirements and to practice reflective learning.
  • To use keyboard skills to produce customised treatment plans and materials and effectively manage mobile device to access client records, emails and other aspects of electronic communication.
  • To manage infection control risks including those from bodily fluids.
  • To write reports containing highly complex, confidential and sensitive information which may be used in a legal context.
  • To undertake reviews of evidence to underpin current practice.
  • Undertake other duties commensurate with this grade of post in agreement with the relevant line manager.
Person Specification
Qualifications
  • oHCPC Licence to practice
  • oFull Membership of Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists.
  • oEvidence of recent relevant CPD activities in specialist area, e.g. ASD , dysphagia, fluency, SLI
  • oPost graduate qualification in paediatric dysphagia
  • oTrained in ADOS (Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule)
  • oTrained in NAS EarlyBird
  • oTrained in PECS
Experience
  • oSignificant experience as a qualified therapist of diagnostic assessment in any one of the following areas: ASD, dysphagia, fluency or SLI as part of a multi-disciplinary team
  • oExperience of working as a qualified therapist in a range of pre-school multi-disciplinary settings
  • oSignificant experience of delivering clinical support and supervision to less experienced Speech and Language Therapists and/or SLT assistants
  • oSignificant experience as a qualified therapist of managing a mixed and complexcaseload across a number of settings including Early years settings and clients' homes
  • oDemonstrates high awareness of safeguarding issues and processes
  • oSignificant experience as a qualified therapist of successful multi-agency working with families and stakeholders in Local Authority and Health settings.
  • oSpecialist management of a diverse caseload, as a qualified therapist, having provided support to other professionals.
  • oSignificant experience of using augmentative communication e.g. Makaton signing, symbols, communication aids.
  • oExperience of delivering successful/effective training to other professionals.
Skills
  • oAble to use evidence base to inform clinical decision-making around complex presentations in specialist clinical area
  • oAble to work with a range of families in a culturally and socially diverse area
  • oExcellent communication and interpersonal skills. Able to explain complex ideas in a simple way. Able to write clear reports and notes to a professional standard.
  • oAble to use signing and communication aids where appropriate.
  • oIT literate and able to use a range of specialist programmes e.g. Communicate in Print.
  • oAble to develop specialist programmes of care & explain them to carers and staff.
