Job description

This exciting opportunity is for a full-time post to work in this unique and supportive environment within a busy children's hospital. We are looking for an innovative, enthusiastic consultant with appropriate clinical experience to join our team of 11 paediatric Gastroenterologists working across GI Allergy & Neurogastroenterology & Motility Units. The GI Allergy service provides specialist multi-disciplinary care to central and North London, and we host an active clinical research unit. We aim to expand our expertise especially in Upper GI motility assessment and treatments, related research in this subspeciality.

This post involves a 1 in 7 on‑call commitment (non-resident) for Gastroenterology patients when attending providing 24 hour cover for the service. They will also be required to undertake senior leadership responsibility for the management of patient care whilst leading a team of middle‑grade Drs in the in‑patient care of children. The on‑call consultant is expected to undertake ward rounds at the weekend and on public holidays.

The successful applicant will join the Mucosal Immunology and GI allergy Unit within the Department of Paediatric Gastroenterology, with strong links with the Neurogastroenterology & Motility Unit and will run 2 fixed outpatient clinics per week. The successful applicant will also be required to undertake one endoscopy list on alternative weeks, with additional cases under general anaesthesia as required, and assist in performance, analysis and reporting specialist impedance and manometric studies.

The post holder will share the outpatient and inpatient service with the other post holders. The main Gastroenterology ward round on Monday am is the principal teaching ward round and is attended by all consultants together. The post holder will also be attending service‑wide MDTs such as histology and radiology meetings.

The post consists of 2 fixed outpatient clinics per week, alongside 1 weekly GI Allergy MDT meeting, pre and post clinic planning meetings. The post holder will undertake one acute paediatric gastroenterology assessment unit (PGAU) or endoscopy / manometry every other week under general anaesthesia. The GI allergy service is developing a nasal endoscopy service, which the post‑holder will be expected to contribute. Maintaining skills in neurogastroenterology will be encouraged, through assisting in performance, analysis and reporting specialist impedance and manometric studies, They will provide support in performing a manometry list to the motility unit, if required. The post‑holder will regularly undertake/supervise trainees in other GI investigations.

The post holder will contribute to 1 in 10 on‑call commitment providing 24‑hour cover for the service. The on‑call consultant is expected to undertake ward rounds at the weekend and on public holidays. During the on‑call week, the post holder will perform twice‑daily multidisciplinary ward rounds, see in hospital referrals and provide out of hours clinical advice for all internal gastroenterology cases, including liaison with local teams over admission and discharge, and provide a consultation service to patients under the care of other GOSH teams including PICU. Moreover, the post holder will provide telephone advice including out of hours to the GOSH general paediatric team and external Paediatricians/Centres. The consultant of the week will be responsible for communicating with other members of the GI and general consultant teams on the progress and plans for GI inpatients. During the weeks on service the consultant will have limited outpatient commitment (a rapid access clinic), though would be expected to see emergency referrals. The on‑call rota is shared equally between all Consultants except for two senior consultants.

The post holder will have direct responsibilities of training, appraisal and teaching of one of the middle grade doctors within the unit. The post‑holder will be expected to have or be working towards GMC educational supervisor accreditation. Dedicated educational supervision time is included within SPA activity, and the post‑holder will be an education supervisor of a GI allergy fellow.
