Our Crown Court Clerk training programme provides a structured yet flexible approach to building the skills required to perform this vital role.

About Us

HM Courts & Tribunals Service (HMCTS) is responsible for the administration of criminal, civil and family Courts and Tribunals in England and Wales. Our roles support our service users and colleagues within HMCTS, as well as people and businesses access to potentially life-changing justice. We are looking for individuals who are committed to public service and making a difference in people’s lives to deliver justice. If you are interested in developing a career with a real purpose, please apply.

About You

This is a unique position at the heart of justice. It requires high emotional resilience, the ability to understand and be sensitive to many sometimes difficult issues, and a non‑judgemental approach to service users. You are an active listener and confident communicator; able to speak publicly in court and liaise with the Judge, defence, prosecution, media, and members of the public regarding complex and sensitive matters in a calm and professional manner. You are a real team player, working with the clerking team, to ensure the smooth running of all Crown Courts sitting daily; able to intervene in Court when required and maximise judicial sitting time. With experience in producing exact and time‑critical documentation, your ability to focus will be key in taking verdicts, conducting arraignments, producing Court orders and recording hearing outcomes accurately and efficiently. Resilient, keen to learn, and able to multi‑task, you are familiar with working within processes and have the IT skills to adapt to new systems and technologies as we invest in digital solutions to improve the delivery of justice.

Your Skills and Experience
  • Able to speak publicly in a courtroom environment.
  • Excellent communication, organisational and prioritisation skills.
  • Ability to complete documents accurately and to deadlines.
  • IT proficient with the ability to learn and adapt to different technologies and software packages.
Responsibilities

This role involves ensuring the smooth operation of Crown Court sittings, preparing and handling Court documents, recording outcomes, and supporting timely and accurate judicial processes. You will work with the clerking team to maximise court sitting time and provide a professional service to judges, defence, prosecution, and the public.

Standard full‑time hours are 37 per week. The organisation welcomes part‑time, flexible and job‑sharing patterns where they meet the role’s demands and are agreed prior to appointment. For part‑time working, the minimum is 22.5 hours per week over 3 days. Some travel to other court locations within the Midlands Region may be required.

Qualifications and Eligibility

From 22 July 2025, the Government increased the salary threshold and skills level for Skilled Worker visas. This role does not meet the eligibility criteria for sponsorship if you are applying for the first time, unless you have held a Skilled Worker visa continuously since before 22 July 2025.
