The Paediatric Emergency Department Senior Clinical Fellow (PEM SCF) role at the Leeds General Infirmary (LGI), situated in the heart of Leeds, offers an exciting opportunity to work in a busy tertiary paediatric specialist centre. The PED sees approximately 45,000 new attendances each year, ranging from simple minor injuries to complex medical and trauma patients.

The role is supported by an allocated PEM Consultant who works in the department from 9 am to midnight each day, a dedicated paediatric nursing team and a variety of training doctors and Advanced Clinical Practitioners (ACPs), providing significant opportunities for PEM‑specific training and development.

Clinical work 60% – direct patient care in the Paediatric Emergency Department.

Non‑clinical work 40% – teaching, research, simulation training and curriculum development.

• Simulation (SIM) – in‑situ simulation for common paediatric emergency presentations, trauma training with multidisciplinary teams, neonatal simulation alongside the neonatal SIM fellows, and organising, delivering and coordinating all simulation training sessions, including the Leeds Paediatric Major Trauma Course.
• Teaching – organise the Paediatric ST3 teaching sessions (every Wednesday for an hour and a half), coordinate teaching rota, liaise with other specialities for talks (e.g., DKA, paediatric eating disorders), contribute to regional ST3 teaching days, organise teaching days for non‑trainee registrars in ED, and deliver teaching for the CT3 emergency medicine boot‑camp week.
• Research – plan new PERUKI research studies at LGI PED, site visits, study set‑up, train staff for recruitment, attend regular research meetings and national PERUKI days, assist with ongoing trial management and liaise with research nursing staff.
• Additional opportunities – lead safeguarding meetings, attend paediatric M&M meetings, participate in a newly established regional paediatric journal club, and, if desired, spend time in other areas such as fracture clinic.

• MBBS or equivalent medical qualification; MRCEM or MRCPCH; successful completion of CT3/ST3+.
• Relevant higher degree (MD, PhD or equivalent) and working towards FRCEM or Paediatric CCT.

• Full registration and licence to practise from the GMC at intended start date; eligibility to work in the UK.
• Advanced Life Support Certificate from the Resuscitation Council UK or equivalent (required to complete Foundation competences) by intended start date.

• 36 months of experience after full GMC registration or equivalent, with evidence of achievement of foundation competences in line with GMC standards and Good Medical Practice.
• Demonstrated commitment to patient safety, partnership working, professional integrity and non‑discrimination.

• Sound clinical knowledge and judgement, ability to prioritise clinical needs and maximise safety.
• Initial management of acutely ill patients and awareness of ethical issues in research.
• Understanding of audit, clinical risk management, evidence‑based practice, patient safety and quality improvement initiatives.
• Research and audit skills with evidence of academic achievements, publications, presentations and participation in quality improvement projects.
• Teaching experience and positive feedback.
