Senior Clinical Fellow in Emergency Medicine

LeedsTeaching Hospital NHS Trust is one of the largest acute hospital trusts in the country. It provides emergency care in three Emergency Departments with Adult Emergency Departments at St James University Hospital (SJUH) and the Leeds General Infirmary (LGI), and a separate Paediatric Emergency Department at the Leeds General Infirmary.

The Leeds Emergency Departments offer 12-month Senior Clinical Fellow posts designed to provide individually tailored experience and training for those who want to develop a special interest in Emergency Medicine whilst working in a large teaching hospital and major trauma centre. This fellowship is specifically targeted at those with an interest in improving their skills managing severely injured patients, and improving the care provided in the regional Major Trauma Centre at the LGI.

Posts are designed with substantial non‑clinical time (40%) to allow for the development of special interests. They are supported by a generous study budget and trainees are supported to complete a relevant PG Certificate during their time with us.

In addition to a clinical role at the regional MTC, 40% of this post is dedicated to non‑clinical activities related to the provision of high‑quality Major Trauma care. Previous projects have included work on developing a chest drain proforma for pneumothoraces requiring procedural drainage, as well as local and international trauma education.

Main duties of the job

The role will involve opportunities to utilise non‑clinical time to shadow colleagues in other trauma‑related specialties, including Anesthesia, Critical Care, Major Trauma Surgery, and Pre‑Hospital Emergency Medicine.

Weekly attendance at the trauma Morbidity and Mortality meeting is expected, where all cases ISS >15 are discussed. As the post continues, it is expected that you will take a more active role in this, taking part in the rota of reviewing and presenting cases. You will also participate in, and ultimately lead, some of the weekly virtual Trauma of the Week peer‑to‑peer review sessions, joining a rota of experienced specialty consultants. Finally, the trauma fellow is involved in the delivery of the monthly trauma simulation, which involves the whole MDT trauma team.

In summary, through clinical exposure and a varied non‑clinical portfolio of activities, this role will allow you to develop as an expert trauma team leader and emergency physician, and to contribute to the provision of high‑quality Major Trauma care to the patients of West Yorkshire and beyond.

Job responsibilities

Job Title: Senior Clinical Fellow in Emergency Medicine and Major Trauma.
Grade: ST3+.
Site and Location: LGI.

Our Senior Clinical Fellows work alongside our HSTs in Emergency Medicine and Staff Grade doctors on our tier two rota. The SCF in EM/Major Trauma is based in the Emergency Department at the LGI, working across all adult clinical areas.

Depending on the individual's experience, the applicant will work either on the CT3 or HST rota. The individual will have up to 16 hours of non‑clinical duties depending on individual development needs. Non‑clinical time is for the development of the fellow's special interest in Major Trauma; there is also an expectation that fellows will contribute to the department's education, governance and research programmes, e.g.

• Delivery and development of undergraduate education and support of medical students in the department
• Delivery and development of postgraduate education
• Delivery of simulation training
• Development of clinical guidelines relevant to the ED
• Contributing to clinical governance requirements including quality improvement projects and audit

The posts are offered on a fixed‑term contract for up to 12 months in the first instance. The post holder must be registered with GMC and hold a licence to practise.

Experience

• 36 months experience after full GMC registration or equivalent, evidence of achievement of foundation competencies in line with GMC standards / Good Medical Practice, including:

• Provide employment history; evidence of career progression consistent with circumstances.
• At least six months (WTE) experience in Anaesthesia/Critical Care Medicine, clinical experience managing Major Trauma.

Qualifications

• MBBS or equivalent medical qualification; MRCEM or equivalent; Successful completion of CT3/ST3.
• Relevant higher degree; working towards FRCEM.

Eligibility, Fitness to practise, and Language Skills

• Be eligible for full registration with, and hold a current licence to practise from, the GMC at intended start date.
• Advanced Life Support Certificate from the Resuscitation Council UK or equivalent.
• Advanced Trauma Life Support/European Trauma Course Certificate by intended start date.
• Fit to practise safely and aware of own training needs.
• Demonstrable skills in written and spoken English adequate for effective communication with patients and colleagues.
• Evidence of English proficiency by academic training, IELTS score of ≥7.5 in each domain or equivalent.
