Children's Emergency Department Deputy Sister/Deputy Charge Nurse

Are you an experienced Children's Emergency Nurse looking for a new challenge?

Do you want to join our friendly and motivated multidisciplinary team who strive to deliver high quality emergency care to patients presenting acutely unwell with various illnesses and injuries?

We are looking for experienced nurses with strong clinical knowledge, excellent communication skills and a passion for emergency care.

Due to our links with the local Universities and our dedicated multi-disciplinary education team we are able to offer tailor made education and development packages. We have a dedicated Children\'s Emergency Department Educator who will work alongside you in the department and support you in your development.

We offer training opportunities delivered in house, university and national accredited courses with access to the Emergency Nurse Practitioner (ENP) and Advanced Clinical Practitioner (ACP) programmes. The educational team also deliver weekly MDT simulations within the department and our training pod.

You will require relevant year\'s experience and the clinical skills to work at a senior level within the Children\'s Emergency Department. You will be expected to work in all areas of the department to maintain your clinical skills. You will be supported by the sisters/charge nurses and the senior nursing team in the development of your management and leadership skills.

Main duties of the job

This is a rewarding but demanding post that requires commitment & dedication to provide quality care to infants, children, young people and their families/carers from a diverse population. You will also be;

  • Responsible for the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of programmes of evidence-based nursing care to a group of patients.
  • Leadership and supervision of others carrying out all aspects of the caring process.
  • Deputise and take charge of the given area regularly in the absence of the Ward/Unit Manager who has 24 hour accountability and responsibility.
  • Actively contribute to setting and maintaining high standards of quality nursing care.
  • Participate in the effective clinical leadership and management of the ward team.
  • Actively contribute to the improvement of services and the quality of care provision to meet the needs of patients, service users and their families.
  • Act as a role model, mentoring, teaching, assessing and supporting students and learners on placement and participate in the education, development and mentorship of other staff.

Job responsibilities

KEY WORKING RELATIONSHIPS Ward/Unit Manager and staff, Matrons, middle and non-clinical managers; wider multi-disciplinary team; medical staff, Facilities Directorate; Nursing Directorate; Infection control, Patient Information and Liaison Service; Nurse Specialists and Directorate Education and Practice Development Team, Clinical Support Nurses and Clinical Placement Facilitators.

Delivery of effective health care within the organisation

  • Ensure that the delivery of care to own patients and for all patients when in charge meet the standards determined by the Ward/Unit Manager and the Standards for Better Health.
  • Share responsibility with the Ward/Unit Manager to ensure that the highest standards of infection prevention and control are practiced at all times.
  • Contribute to the development of CMG and Trust policies, procedures and clinical guidelines and ensure compliance of self and others.
  • Take due regard of the importance of the effect and consequence of the ward / care environment with regard to its physical, psychological and social effects on patients and care delivery.
  • Promote, develop and implement patient and public involvement activities in the ward area, leading to service improvement.
  • Ensure that self and team members act at all times to provide a personalised service to patients in accordance with agreed standards and promote quality, diversity and rights.
  • Contribute to setting, maintaining and monitoring of standards of care to the optimum level and lead the improvement of care, through benchmarking, audit and research.
  • Ensure that self and all nursing staff practice at all times in accordance with the NMC Code of Professional Conduct, raising any concerns with the Ward/Unit Manager and action as directed.
  • Participate in ward audits and the development and implementation of relevant action plans and implementation of changes as required.
  • Participate in service redesign, reconfiguration projects effecting change and new ways of working.Monitor health, safety and security of self and others and promote best practice in the ward area.
  • Ensure own actions assist with maintaining best practice and Standards for Better Health.
  • Carry out duties in accordance with the Health and Safety at Work Act 1971.
  • Move and handle patients and goods in ways that promote the health of the patient and care team and are consistent with legislation.
  • Actively responsible for the maintenance of a clean and safe environment adhering to infection control policies, procedures and best practice.
  • Responsible for maintaining safe and hazard-free area of work.
Person Specification
Education / Qualifications
  • RSCN / RN - Child - first level
  • Recognised NMC Teaching and Assessing Qualification or equivalent
  • Evidence of ongoing professional development
  • Degree in relevant clinical area (Emergency Nursing, Critical Care, Advanced Practice)
Experience
  • Minimum of 3 years\' experience in Emergency Nursing
  • Achieved full competency in ED extended skills eg Plastering, Suturing, Venepuncture & Cannulation
  • Recognised Resuscitation course - PILS/PLS
  • Contribution to projects that have enhanced or changed clinical care or service development
  • APLS (Advanced Paediatric Life Support)

  • Acts as a Clinical Role model and as a Mentor, Assessor and Support for learners within the ward or unit
  • Use initiative and has the ability to lead and co-ordinate a multi- disciplinary team with minimal supervision
