Job description
Responsibilities
  • Producing customer orders from scratch
  • Interpreting optical prescriptions and drawings
  • Correcting faults and re‑assembling glasses
  • Carrying out testing and adjustments
  • Preparing and maintaining materials and equipment
  • Ensuring the highest quality assured product, communicating with colleagues, managers, and the public – verbal, written or electronic – using industry terminology
  • Identifying hazards and risks in the workplace: PPE, COSHH, manual handling
  • Using tools and equipment required to manufacture optical products (lenses, frames and component parts)
  • Identifying, organising and using resources to complete tasks with consideration for cost, quality, priority and environmental impact
  • Calibrating and maintaining optical equipment and tools to supplier guidelines and MDD specifications, such as blockers, tracers, lens curve generators, coating equipment or focimeters
  • Applying quality assurance principles and procedures and recording outcomes for completed orders
  • Identifying products, their classification and any impact on manufacturing or quality (e.g., engravings on safety glasses, remarking progressives)
  • Monitoring stock levels and rotating stock
  • Collecting and using data on productivity and quality to improve processes and staff training
  • Preparing component parts for manufacturing or treatment
  • Manufacturing component parts to complete the manufacturing or treatment process
  • Using information and digital technology, complying with data protection and cyber‑security regulations and policies
  • Applying standard operating procedures (SOPs) for optical products
  • Applying repair practices and techniques to optical products
  • Selecting tools and equipment to manufacture and repair optical products
  • Planning work sequence to support the effective use of time and resources in the manufacturing process
  • Producing customer orders from online, telephone and face‑to‑face requests
  • Checking and calibrating tools and equipment
  • Interpreting work instructions including optical prescriptions and manufacturer's guidance for component parts
  • Conducting supplier and credit processes
  • Applying safe systems of work and control measures
  • Applying health and safety procedures in compliance with regulations and standards

Training schedule
  • Level 3 – Spectacle Maker Apprenticeship
  • Daily on‑the‑job training in store – no college required
  • Full‑time, 5 out of 7 days
  • Training provider: Specsavers Optical Superstores Limited
  • Apprentices without Level 2 English and maths must achieve this level prior to the end‑point assessment
