Job Purpose
The Loans & Membership Manager plays a key role in supporting the financial well-being of our members by onboarding members and assessing and processing loan applications in a fair, responsible, and member-focused manner. Working within the regulatory framework of the UK credit union sector, the Loans & Membership Manager ensures that all lending decisions align with both our internal policies and external compliance requirements.
Key Responsibilities
Loan Assessment and Processing
- Conduct interviews with applicants to collect financial and personal information relevant to loan applications.
- Assess loan applications for affordability, creditworthiness, and compliance with lending policy.
- Recommend appropriate loan products to meet members’ needs and financial situations.
- Process loan applications accurately, ensuring complete documentation and regulatory compliance.
Member Service and Support
- Provide exceptional service to members, offering clear information on loan, interest rates, and repayments.
- Build strong member relationships by delivering financial guidance in a respectful, supportive and confidential manner.
- Promote responsible borrowing and financial inclusion for all members, including those with limited credit history.
- On board new members as required
Risk Management and Compliance
- Conduct loan underwriting and make lending decisions within authorised limits / delegated authority
- Ensure full adherence to UK regulatory requirements, including the FCA & PRA rules, and GDPR.
- Maintain accurate records and support internal and external audits as required.
Loan Monitoring and Collections
- Monitor active loans and support early intervention where necessary.
- Liaise with credit control to manage arrears professionally and ethically.
- Assist in the preparation of loan performance reports and analysis for management review.
Member Education and Product Promotion
- Educate members on credit union services, promoting financial literacy and product awareness to enhance their understanding.
- Identify opportunities to offer relevant products such as savings accounts, budgeting support and signposting to other agencies.
- Promote loan products as necessary
Essential Skills and Qualifications
- Previous experience in financial services, preferably in a lending or customer service role.
- Knowledge of UK credit and lending regulations, including FCA and GDPR requirements.
- Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate clearly and compassionately.
- Attention to detail and excellent organisational skills.
- Proficiency with office and financial software (e.g., MS Office, loan management systems).
Desirable
- Experience working within a credit union or community-based financial organisation.
- Understanding of financial inclusion and support for vulnerable customers.
- Credit or finance-related qualifications
