Job responsibilities
Main duties
- Provide outpatient and inpatient services for general ENT, including head and neck, thyroid, and parathyroid surgery.
- Perform DCC duties, including clinical and administrative tasks, emergency and on‑call responsibilities, and contribute to quality improvement in line with specialty and Trust objectives.
- Participate in the middle‑tier ENT on‑call rota (currently 1:7), covering the acute base at Pinderfields and supporting emergency services at Dewsbury and Pontefract hospitals.
- Operate independently on high‑volume, low‑complexity cases such as tonsillectomy, adenoidectomy, insertion of grommets, etc.
- Run independent clinics, including acute and emergency clinics, and support and teach Foundation Year 2 doctors, Core Trainees (CTs), Advanced Clinical Practitioners, Clinical Nurse Specialists and Nurse Practitioners.
- Undertake administrative responsibilities; office space, dedicated secretarial support, and networked computer access will be provided.
- Support through a Consultant Educational Supervisor and undertake Supporting Professional Activities in accordance with the Trust framework, with a minimum of one SPA in the core 10‑PA timetable.
Summary of Duties

- Participate fully in the out‑of‑hours on‑call middle‑grade rota (non‑resident on call).
- Engage in outpatient clinics and theatre activities.
- Participate in multi‑disciplinary team (MDT) meetings.
- Contribute to relevant administrative responsibilities.
- Teach and supervise junior doctors and allied clinical staff.
- Be actively involved in clinical audit, governance, and service improvement initiatives.
Essential person specification requirements
To meet the requirements of this role, applicants must demonstrate the following essential criteria:
- Full GMC Registration with licence to practise.
- Medical Degree from a recognised medical school.
- Post‑graduate qualification in ENT surgery; MRCS or equivalent.
- Eligibility to work in the UK.
- Completed at least four years full‑time hospital service at a junior or higher grade level post since first obtaining full or limited registration, with a further minimum of two years’ experience in ENT at a Middle‑grade/Registrar level.
- Ability to conduct independent clinics and low‑complexity day‑case operations such as tonsillectomy, adenoidectomy, insertion of grommets, etc.
- Demonstrates an intelligent and analytical approach to problem solving.
- Good time management.
- Possesses good communication skills and flexibility.

Person Specification
Qualifications
- Medical Degree from a recognised medical school.
- Post‑graduate qualification in ENT surgery.
- MRCS or equivalent.
Desirable
- Progress towards or attainment of Royal College Exams.
- ATLS, ALS, APLS or PALS certification.
- Higher qualification e.g. EBEORL‑HNS, FRCS or equivalent.
Experience
- Completed at least four years full‑time hospital service at a junior or higher grade level post since first obtaining full or limited registration, with a further minimum of two years experience in ENT at a Middle‑grade/Registrar level.
- Able to do independent clinics and low‑complexity day‑case operations such as tonsillectomy, adenoidectomy, insertion of grommets, etc.
