Job description
What skills and experience we’re looking for

Have you ever felt proud walking away from a job knowing everything is just right? The doors are secure, the classrooms are safe, the grounds are welcoming – and because of you, a school day can run smoothly.

At Wyvern Academy, every success, smile, and moment of progress depends on a safe and well‑cared‑for environment. As our Handyman, you’ll be the quiet hero behind the scenes – the one who keeps the school ticking, fixes problems before they become worries, and creates a place where pupils and staff feel secure, comfortable, and ready to thrive.

No two days here are the same. One moment you might be fixing, building, or maintaining; the next, preparing spaces for learning or supporting a community event. You’ll be part of a small, committed site team where your skills, initiative, and pride in your work genuinely matter.

What you’ll be doing
  • Be the go‑to problem solver, keeping our buildings, grounds, and facilities safe, secure, and well‑maintained.
  • Carry out general maintenance tasks including basic plumbing, carpentry, painting, and repairs.
  • Help create a clean, welcoming environment by supporting cleaning standards across the site.
  • Open, close, and secure the school, helping maintain safety and peace of mind for all.
  • Support the smooth running of the school day – from moving furniture to preparing spaces for learning and events.
  • Look after our swimming pool facilities, ensuring cleanliness, safety, and compliance (training provided where needed).
  • Work alongside contractors, colleagues, and managers to get jobs done safely and to a high standard.
  • Step in during emergencies – leaks, weather issues, or unexpected challenges – with calm and practicality.
  • Play your part in keeping everyone safe through strong Health & Safety awareness and care.
Who we’re looking for
  • Reliable, practical, and proactive – someone who takes real pride in their work.
  • Experienced in building maintenance, with hands‑on skills across general repairs and upkeep.
  • Calm, approachable, and able to work well with staff, pupils, and the wider community.
  • Organised and adaptable, happy to tackle both routine tasks and unexpected challenges.
  • Physically able to handle practical tasks and comfortable working both independently and as part of a team.
  • Committed to safeguarding, professionalism, and making Wyvern Academy a safe place for everyone.

If you enjoy practical work with purpose – and want a role where your efforts directly support young people’s wellbeing and success – this could be the perfect fit.

What the school offers its staff
Why join us
  • Know that what you do truly matters – every fix, check, and improvement helps create a safe, happy place where young people can learn and thrive.
  • Feel supported from day one with a thorough induction and training that helps you settle in with confidence.
  • Be part of a friendly, down‑to‑earth team who look out for one another through busy days, unexpected challenges, and the moments that make you smile.
  • Grow your skills with access to ongoing professional development – we believe in investing in people who take pride in what they do.
  • Join an inclusive, collaborative site and school team who tackle challenges together and see things through, no matter what the day brings.
  • Enjoy a practical, hands‑on role where no two days are ever the same and every day you’ll leave knowing you’ve made a difference.
  • Build your future within Wyvern Academy and Southern Education Trust, a growing Trust with opportunities to develop and progress your career.
