This role involves supporting special needs pupils across education, health, and care, ensuring they access their learning fully. Candidates should possess strong communication skills and be capable of handling physical demands. Full training will be provided, making this an excellent opportunity to enhance your career in education.
Are you passionate about making a real difference in the lives of pupils with special needs? We are looking for an enthusiastic and compassionate Education, Health and Care Assistant (EHCA) to join our supportive school environment. This varied and rewarding role involves providing crucial support across education, health, and care domains, enabling our pupils to fully access their learning and development.
Working under the guidance of teaching, HLTA, and medical staff, you will be a vital part of our pupils' journey. Your main responsibilities will encompass three key areas:
Facilitate Learning: Provide specialist support to pupils with special needs, ensuring appropriate access to all learning activities in and outside the classroom.
Classroom Management: Assist the teacher in managing pupils, the learning environment, and the day-to-day running of the classroom.
Planning & Development: Help with the planning of activities and the implementation of Individual Education and Behaviour Plans.
Promote Independence: Encourage pupils' emotional wellbeing, communication, and independence skills.
Specialised Care: Participate in and implement training for a range of medical competencies (e.g., gastrostomy support, emergency epilepsy treatment, breathing support including tracheostomy care).
Welfare: Assist with pupil first-aid and welfare issues, and undertake routine medical support under nursing supervision.
Planning: Help develop and implement essential health care plans.
Personal Care: Carry out intimate care duties and assist with the development and implementation of Risk Assessments and Personal Care programmes.
Behaviour Management: Promote positive pupil behaviour, dealing promptly with conflicts and incidents according to school policy.
Safety: Ensure pupil care and safety during all activities.
The ideal candidate will be:
Adaptable & Practical: Willing to undertake the physical demands of the role, including lifting, manual handling of pupils for positioning and toileting, bending, and sustained physical effort.
Committed to Training: Eager to develop a range of essential medical and communication competencies (like signing and PECS) - full training is provided.
A Strong Communicator: Possessing effective written and oral communication skills to liaise with pupils, staff, parents, and other professionals.
Initiative Driven: Capable of working mostly from instructions but occasionally making minor decisions using your own initiative.
Resilient: Able to handle occasional emotional stress related to difficult child protection or welfare issues, and deal professionally with challenging behaviour.
This is an opportunity to directly contribute to the holistic development of our pupils. You will receive extensive specialist training and work as part of a highly collaborative team, where your contribution is valued every day.
