• Design and develop game back-end server logic.

Skills

Strong commercial experience with Java

Understanding of caching technologies

Familiar with build tools (Maven)

Contract Back-End Java Engineer – Remote – up to £650 per day

12-month contract (with potential extension)

Are you an experienced Back-End Java Engineer with proven experience in the gambling industry? This is a fantastic opportunity to work on large-scale, high-traffic platforms for a well-known operator, delivering critical back-end services in a modern, distributed environment.

This is a fully remote contract (UK based), initially for 12 months with strong potential to extend.

Responsibilities

• Designing and developing game back-end server logic to support gambling products at scale.
• Building, enhancing, and maintaining back-end services that power high-traffic gambling platforms.
• Contributing to the design and architecture of distributed systems that need to be fast, scalable, and secure.
• Writing clean, reusable, and reliable Java code that follows best practices.
• Working with databases, caching, and messaging systems to ensure smooth performance and real-time gameplay.
• Collaborating with Product, QA, Front-End, and DevOps teams to deliver new features and resolve challenges.
• Taking an active part in Agile ceremonies – planning, stand-ups, reviews, retrospectives.
• Creating and maintaining clear documentation for APIs, services, and workflows.
• Providing production support and troubleshooting to keep systems stable and efficient.
• Driving continuous improvements through refactoring, automation, and performance tuning.

Requirements

• You have strong commercial experience with Java and frameworks such as Spring/Spring Boot.
• You bring solid cloud experience (preferably AWS) and are confident working with Kubernetes and Docker.
• You’re skilled with messaging systems and APIs (Kafka, ActiveMQ, JMS, REST, CometD).
• You have hands-on experience with databases (DB2, MongoDB, MySQL).
• You understand caching technologies.
• You’re familiar with build tools (Maven), web servers (Jetty, Tomcat), and test frameworks (JUnit, Cucumber).
• Experience with Terraform or other infrastructure-as-code tools is a plus.
• Previous gambling/iGaming experience is essential – this is an absolute requirement.
