Job description
Exercise Physiologist Pulmonary Rehabilitation

The Exercise Physiologist will play a key role in the Community Respiratory Team (CRS) in West and Central Sussex, providing Pulmonary Rehabilitation (PR) services to our patients, both through face-to-face classes, virtually and in the home of the patient.

Our PR programmes and promotion of active lifestyles can make a significant difference to the lives of individuals with chronic lung disease, and the post holder will play a key part in triage, assessment, treatment delivery and post-program assessment.

The post holder will work with each patient individually to gain an understanding of their condition and requirements and how PR and engaging in active lifestyle changes will support them to make the very best of living with a long-term pulmonary condition.

Main duties of the job
  • Maintain own personal professional development, identifying educational and clinical training needs in conjunction with lead physiotherapist and/or senior members of staff. Lead on the provision of PR services both face-to-face and virtual.
  • To undertake assessment of patients with diverse or complex physical, psychological, cognitive and behavioural conditions in order to deliver appropriate exercise therapy.
  • Communicate with wider MDT's, service users, carers, stakeholders, the public and their representatives, ensuring effective & accurate information is delivered.
  • To be responsible for identifying equipment faults, and directly resolve fault issues by reporting them in a timely manner to senior staff members.
  • To be responsible for the day-to-day running of the area in which they are working.
  • To make contact with patients via telephone to rebook appointments for DNA's each day to suit service availability and patient choice.
  • To collect, collate, and disseminate complex and sensitive data relating to patients results to relevant health professionals and teams as required.
  • To communicate efficiently on the telephone with all staff, patients, and visitors.
  • To be cost-effective in the use of equipment and resources.
  • To assist in audit & research as necessary.
  • To engage in supervision and education of junior staff and students.
  • To actively contribute to the clinical knowledge share programme in CRS.

Job responsibilities
  • To conduct self in a professional manner and act as a role model to at all times.
  • To undertake all aspects of clinical duties associated with PR/implementing an exercise programme as an autonomous practitioner, linking with senior staff for support as required
  • To ensure all patients receive appropriate and individualised care
  • Take professional and legal accountability and management of clinical risk for all aspects of own work
  • To become familiar with the use of SystmOne and any other computerised systems integral to the running of the department.
  • Maintain patient records accurately and legibly in accordance with trust guidelines.
  • To ensure that all data entered onto any databases are performed in a timely and accurate manner and that statistical records and audits are produced when required.
  • To assist with the efficient running of the PR service by prioritising the daily workload and adhering to system processes where appropriate.
  • To effectively, promptly, and professionally respond to emergency situations maintaining control and requesting assistance as necessary.
  • To remain up to date with latest trends in clinical physiology translating these into practice and transferring this knowledge into practice within ones area of responsibility.
  • To participate in the in-house training and technical competency log within the department.
Person Specification
Qualifications/Professional registration
  • Current registration with the RCCP
  • Degree in Exercise physiology/Sport and Exercise sciences
  • Membership of relevant clinical interest groups eg BACPR, BASES, REPs
Experience
  • Demonstrable experience of the application of exercise physiology in regards to exercise assessment and training.
  • Knowledge of exercise training in relation to cardiorespiratory disease
  • Evidence of relevant postgraduate courses/CPD in Pulmonary Rehabilitation.
  • Good clinical reasoning skills based on evidence and current research.
Skills and knowledge
  • Ability to motivate others to participate in exercise and be able educate regarding the benefits of exercise therapy.
  • The ability to perform and demonstrate a range of exercises for those attending clinical sessions
  • Experience in the safe and correct use of a range of exercise equipment.
  • Ability to work well individually and as part of a wider team
  • Well-developed IT skills across a range of applications
  • Evidence of presentation and teaching skills within exercise physiology.

  • Hold a full UK driving licences with business insurance for work travel
