Overview

Our well‑established client law firm based in Hertfordshire/Bedfordshire is currently seeking Criminal Duty Solicitors to join their team in the Hertfordshire, Bedfordshire, Northamptonshire and Essex Courts. The successful Duty Solicitors will manage their own caseload and represent clients in a mixture of criminal law matters, liaising with Courts, CPS, Police, Counsel and any other professional body.

Responsibilities
  • Interviewing and advising clients.
  • Undertaking casework and managing the case from inception to conclusion.
  • Administering casework and keeping the case management system up to date.
  • Ensuring that casework is promptly and efficiently billed, sending bills to private clients, and claiming interim payments from the Legal Aid Agency when appropriate.
  • Regularly reviewing cases.
  • Attending Court (including Saturday Court) to deal with clients.
  • Keeping up to date with changes in law and practice.
  • Attending training courses.
  • Attending Police Stations when required, even outside normal hours.
  • Holding the 24‑hour Emergency Line as requested.
  • Providing flexible working arrangements once court/police station work is completed.
Qualifications and Skills
  • Admission as a Solicitor and holding the CLAS certificate (Duty).
  • At least 1 year of court experience.
  • Experience in Legal Aid practice.
  • Knowledge of billing and legal procedures.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Ability to prioritise and manage casework.
  • Self‑motivation and the ability to work under limited supervision and with pressure.
  • Legible handwriting.
  • Car ownership.
  • Licence certification and relevant accreditation (as required).
Salary and Benefits

Salary range: £31,537 – £34,434 (Grade G6).
