Job Summary
We are seeking a passionate, innovative and motivated Speech and Language Therapist to join our Children's Speech and Language Therapy Team in North Cumbria. The team provides a service to South Cumbria and works in Millom, Ulverston or Barrow.
Responsibilities
- Support the development and delivery of the targeted and universal levels of the speech and language therapy service in line with current commission requirements.
- Collaborate with interagency work to ensure all children have appropriate language and communication opportunities to reach their desired outcomes.
- Audit and review outcomes for stakeholders and children accessing targeted and universal speech and language therapy service levels.
- Undertake effective and holistic assessment of children referred to understand the functional impact of any speech, language or communication disorder.
- Assume responsibility for a caseload of children and / or young people with diverse presentations, holding the duty of care and prioritising and managing the caseload independently.
- Identify and utilise outcome measures in partnership with Universal SLT colleagues across the county and the management team to measure the impact of the universal role.
- Deliver and reinforce key universal messages to families and practitioners to help develop children’s communication skills.
- Plan and deliver training across the children’s workforce to develop awareness of the importance of communication skills for every child.
- Raise the quality of provision in early years settings to support communication.
- Develop and review referral criteria, pathways and screening tools and support work at the pre‑referral stage (triage function, health promotion and education, expectations of referrers etc).
- Raise awareness of the universal speech and language therapy role/service, promoting this level of response as being timely, safe and proximal to the child.
- Contribute to relevant joint strategy development and establish a targeted level of offer.
Qualifications and Experience
- Degree or equivalent qualification in Speech and Language Therapy approved by the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists (RCSLT).
- Registered with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC).
- On‑going membership with the RCSLT.
- Evidence of formal training, self‑study or specialist experience to post‑graduate level.
- Post‑qualification Dysphagia course (desirable).
- Experience of organising, managing and prioritising a clinical caseload.
- Experience of working as part of a team and with other professionals and agencies.
- Experience of working with children with special educational needs / learning disabilities (desirable).
- Experience of working in community clinics and educational settings, including schools / units for children with learning disabilities / communication disorders (desirable).
- Knowledge of a wide variety of speech, language and communication disorders and current clinical procedures.
- Working knowledge of assessment and therapy materials, including alternative communication strategies (picture exchange, Makaton signing, etc.).
- Ability to carry out and analyse results of various assessments appropriate for different clients, relating to age, disorder, standardisation, etc.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills and time‑management, organisational and administration skills.
- Willingness to learn and be a reflective practitioner.
