Contexte du projet et positionnement scientifique

Le projet MATES for Well‑being est une initiative de recherche émergente et exploratoire visant à ouvrir de nouvelles perspectives dans l’analyse des dynamiques territoriales et du bien‑être. Plutôt que d’appliquer un modèle prédéfini, le projet cherche à co‑construire des approches conceptuelles et computationnelles innovantes afin de comprendre comment les dimensions sociales, économiques, environnementales et institutionnelles interagissent à différentes échelles pour façonner les équilibres territoriaux.

L’équilibre territorial est envisagé non comme un état fixe ou optimal, mais comme un processus dynamique et évolutif, influencé par les infrastructures, la gouvernance, les activités économiques, les ressources environnementales et les choix sociétaux. Le projet vise à explorer la manière dont ces interactions peuvent être représentées, simulées et discutées avec les acteurs, afin de soutenir une prise de décision territoriale plus informée, inclusive et adaptative.

Une ambition centrale du projet est de développer des cadres expérimentaux de simulation et d’aide à la décision, testés sur quatre territoires français contrastés (Compiègne, Strasbourg, Lille, Grand Paris). Ces études de cas servent à la fois d’ancrages empiriques et de laboratoires pour l’innovation méthodologique.

Compte tenu du caractère exploratoire du projet, le ou la chercheur·se postdoctoral·e devra contribuer activement à la définition des questions scientifiques, des méthodes et des outils, en interaction étroite avec l’équipe d’accueil et les partenaires.

Missions principales et contributions scientifiques

Le ou la chercheur·se postdoctoral·e jouera un rôle clé dans le développement intellectuel et méthodologique du projet. Plutôt que d’exécuter un plan de travail figé, il ou elle sera encouragé·e à prendre des initiatives, à proposer des orientations de recherche et à expérimenter de nouvelles approches.

• Exploration et structuration de sources de données hétérogènes (sociales, économiques, environnementales, spatiales), avec attention aux questions d’échelle, d’incertitude et d’interprétabilité.
• Contribuer au développement d’un cadre conceptuel reliant dynamiques territoriales, gouvernance et bien‑être.
• Participer à la conception, à l’implémentation ou à l’adaptation de modèles ou d’approches de simulation (quantitatives, qualitatives, hybrides ou exploratoires).
• Interagir avec les acteurs locaux (aménageurs, institutions, praticiens) afin d’intégrer leurs points de vue dans le processus de recherche.
• Tester et discuter de scénarios sur des territoires pilotes, avec une approche réflexive et critique concernant les hypothèses et les limites des modèles.
• Encadrer ou co‑encadrer des stagiaires et des étudiants impliqués dans le traitement des données, la modélisation ou le travail de terrain.
• Contribuer à la diffusion scientifique (articles, rapports, présentations) et à la visibilité globale du projet.

Le ou la candidat·e idéal·e n’a pas nécessairement à maîtriser l’ensemble des méthodes ou outils dès le départ, mais doit démontrer une forte capacité d’apprentissage, de mise en relation des disciplines et de réflexion critique sur les systèmes complexes.

About the Laboratory:

The AVENUES Laboratory at Université de Technologie de Compiègne develops interdisciplinary research on urban and territorial systems, understood as complex socio‑technical and environmental assemblages. Research at AVENUES combines perspectives from geography, geomatics, urban planning, hydrology, civil and mechanical engineering, and systems analysis, with a strong focus on experimentation, modelling, and decision‑support for public action.

Project Context and Scientific Positioning

The MATES for Well‑being project is an emergent, exploratory research initiative aiming to open new research directions in the analysis of territorial dynamics and well‑being. Rather than applying a predefined model, the project seeks to co‑construct innovative conceptual and computational approaches to understand how social, economic, environmental, and institutional dimensions interact across scales to shape territorial equilibria.

Territorial balance is approached not as a fixed or optimal state, but as a dynamic, evolving process, influenced by infrastructure, governance, economic activities, environmental resources and societal choices. The project aims to explore how these interactions can be represented, simulated, and discussed with stakeholders, in order to support more informed, inclusive, and adaptive territorial decision‑making.

A central ambition of the project is to develop experimental simulation and decision‑support frameworks, tested across four contrasting French territories (Compiègne, Strasbourg, Lille, Grand Paris). These case studies serve both as empirical anchors and as laboratories for methodological innovation.

Given the exploratory nature of the project, the postdoctoral researcher is expected to actively contribute to shaping the scientific questions, methods, and tools, in close interaction with the hosting team and partners.

Main Missions and Scientific Contributions

The postdoctoral researcher will play a key role in the intellectual and methodological development of the project. Rather than executing a fixed work plan, they will be encouraged to take initiatives, propose research directions, and experiment with new approaches.

• Exploring and structuring heterogeneous data sources (social, economic, environmental, spatial), with attention to scale, uncertainty and interpretability questions.
• Contributing to the development of a conceptual framework linking territorial dynamics, governance and well‑being.
• Participating in the design, implementation or adaptation of models or simulation approaches (quantitative, qualitative, hybrid or exploratory).
• Engaging with local stakeholders (planners, institutions, practitioners) to integrate their perspectives into the research process.
• Testing and discussing scenarios on pilot territories, with a reflexive and critical approach to model assumptions and limits.
• Supervising or co‑supervising interns and students involved in data processing, modelling or fieldwork.
• Contributing to scientific dissemination (articles, reports, presentations) and to the broader visibility of the project.
