Job description
Intro Role

Type: Full-time employment

Location: Remote (Spain/Portugal), with a preference for those based in either Madrid or Lisbon.

Are you a policy officer who is passionate about climate innovation and looking to make a difference?

Cleantech Group, the global authority on sustainable innovation, is expanding its team to support its Cleantech for Iberia initiative. This is your chance to actively shape a greener, more innovative EU. Cleantech for Iberia is an initiative gathering 25 cleantech investors, scale-ups, universities and incubators, and supported by Bill Gates-founded Breakthrough Energy to help the Iberian Peninsula become Europe’s next cleantech industrial leader. The initiative is the voice of cleantech innovation in the region, publishing research on cleantech investment and identifying a path to Iberia’s climate and industrial leadership, organizing events where cleantech and policy leaders discuss how policy can support climate leadership and leveraging investments for the next generation of industries. We are working to define a strong and consistent brand, have launched a web platform and attracted early press coverage.

Purpose of the role

We are looking for a talented, energetic, and collaborative policy officer to help us expand our coverage of Spain and Portugal’s climate, energy and innovation policies. You will be part of a passionate team and regularly interact with a high-level network of innovators, investors, policymakers, NGOs and think-tanks.

Responsibilities
  • Research and analyse key policy files and their impact on the scale-up of clean technologies. Remit includes energy policy, climate and carbon policy, standards and regulation, as well as financial instruments
  • Inform and consult cleantech leaders on their policy objectives
  • Write joint policy positions, op-eds and open letters
  • Advocate for recommendations with policymakers at national and regional level, building and maintaining constructive relationships with public institutions and opinion makers
  • Prepare material for workshops and stakeholder meetings
  • Participate in regular meetings with wider network of climate think tanks and collaborate on joint initiatives
  • Contribute to regular client meetings to update and obtain feedback on progress
  • Support for in-person and online events, as needed
  • Contribute to public affairs and communications activities, including helping prepare communication pieces such as blog posts, newsletters, press notes and social media content
  • Be involved in the cleantech ecosystem in your location, be ready to engage in events, network and build partners
Requirements (you don’t need all of these to apply)
  • Bachelor’s degree in policy, international relations, economics, public affairs, communication or other relevant field
  • Significant experience in EU/Spanish/Portuguese energy and/or industrial decarbonization files
  • Excellent critical thinking, written and verbal communication skills
  • Past experience in an EU/Spanish or Portuguese government institution or in public affairs/communications roles is a plus
  • Strong interest in climate/energy innovation and clean technology and willingness to keep up with latest research and industry developments
  • Strong work ethics, self-organization and autonomy, ready to take on challenges and learn new skills
  • Ability to work towards deadlines
  • Desire to develop by giving and receiving feedback to/from other team member
  • Fluent English and Spanish required, Portuguese preferred.
Reasons to work at Cleantech Group
  • Build a climate-positive career by fighting for the acceleration and adoption of clean technologies and green investment!
  • Join a friendly, talented and global team present in Europe and North America
  • Access an unparalleled network of cleantech investors, innovators and policymakers
  • Learning and development actively encouraged
  • Occasional international travel for client work and events around the world

Competitive salary commensurate with experience
