Job description
About Us

The Ontario Cannabis Store provides safe, responsible access to recreational cannabis for adults 19 and older. We operate the sole legal online store for recreational cannabis in Ontario and are the provincial wholesaler of cannabis for private retail stores.

Working at the OCS is a unique opportunity to be part of an agile start-up in a ground-breaking new industry. We're a diverse team passionate about delivering a great customer experience, working together with mutual respect and building value out of our differences. We're an inclusive organization that understands that delivering great results comes out of ensuring every voice is heard.

About the Role

We're looking for a Senior Financial Analyst who owns the full financial reporting and regulatory compliance lifecycle, delivering accurate and timely monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements, IFRS-compliant disclosures, Ministry and Board reporting, and audit-ready documentation, while acting as a technical accounting subject matter expert on complex and non-routine transactions. The role leads advanced accounting and variance analysis, including budget and forecast-to-actual reviews, and identifies system and ERP enhancement opportunities to strengthen financial operations and reporting capabilities. In close partnership with FP&A and business leaders, the role monitors financial performance to ensure consistent accounting treatment, high-quality management reporting, and decision-useful insights based on reliable actuals. The position also supports senior finance leadership on special finance initiatives, economic and industry analysis, financial policy updates, industry & public sector benchmarking, and Ministry-related financial obligations, including the preparation of financial updates and insights for Finance management and Board-level stakeholders.

About Your Day
  • Deliver the full monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reporting cycle, ensuring compliance with IFRS, GAAP/non-GAAP requirements, public-sector legislation, directives, and regulatory obligations, including complete disclosures and audit-ready working papers.
  • Prepare regulatory submissions, Ministry and internal reporting packages, incorporating variance analysis, performance metrics, decision-useful insights, and executive-level financial commentary.
  • Act as a technical accounting and financial reporting expert, providing research, memos, impact analyses, and guidance on complex, non-routine transactions and related business process implementations.
  • Maintain and enhance the general ledger and chart of accounts, including reconciliations, classifications, amortization schedules, journal entries, and structural optimization to protect financial data integrity.
  • Perform advanced variance analysis, financial ratio analysis, and performance monitoring to support senior management decision-making.
  • Partner closely with FP&A, business leaders, auditors, and senior leadership to align financial and corporate reporting, narratives, KPIs, issue resolution, and Board-level deliverables.
  • Support the design, documentation, monitoring, and continuous improvement of internal controls over financial reporting (ICFR) to mitigate financial and operational risks.
  • Identify and implement process improvements, automation opportunities, and ERP/system enhancements to strengthen reporting efficiency, accuracy, and controls.
  • Support month-end and year-end close activities, including journal entries, reconciliations, and financial control procedures.
  • Collaborate with internal and external auditors to support testing, remediation, and ongoing control improvements.
  • Champion a continuous improvement mindset by streamlining workflows, approvals, and reporting processes across Finance.
  • Act as a finance business partner and project resource on departmental and enterprise-wide initiatives, including cross-functional projects and IT enhancements.
  • Enhance corporate and finance policy frameworks by identifying gaps, recommending updates, and aligning policies with legislation, directives, fiscal stewardship expectations, and business needs.
  • Conduct economic, statistical, and industry analysis, monitoring macro- and microeconomic trends, provincial and federal budget impacts, and risks relevant to the Ontario cannabis marketplace.
  • Develop and analyze economic drivers, KPIs, and industry benchmarks across licensed producers, retailers, wholesalers, and comparable public-sector GBEs to support forecasting, trend analysis, and decision-making.
  • Prepare economic updates, benchmarking materials, and analytical presentations for senior management, the Finance Committee, the Board, and ad-hoc stakeholders.
  • Collaborate with the FP&A CPM tools team to develop, standardize, and maintain dashboards, analytics, and reporting that enhance visibility and consistency across Finance.
  • Strengthen finance governance and documentation, including SOPs, job aids, and reporting standards, while ensuring compliance with the Act, MoU, OPS policies, regulatory standards, and related legislation.
  • Provide cross-departmental financial support, including inter-agency requests, audit inquiries, accounting treatment recommendations, continuous improvement initiatives, and support to Finance leadership and team members.
About You
  • Bachelor's degree in accounting, business administration, commerce, or equivalent.
  • 4+ years of relevant work experience in financial reporting, control environment, and financial analysis.
  • Demonstrated experience with financial systems and data query tools.
  • Experience from large public accounting firms auditing or reviewing companies of all sizes and public status type is preferred.
  • 3+ years of relevant work experience in financial compliance and regulatory financial reporting is preferred.
  • CPA designation or equivalent (CA, CGA, CMA, ACCA, CPA [US]).
