Job description
Overview

Position: Plasma Physicist. Reporting to: Vice President, Research and Development (David Plant). Location: Richmond, BC, Canada.

General Fusion is a global leader in the race to commercialize clean fusion energy. We pursue Magnetized Target Fusion (MTF) and aim to provide zero-carbon fusion power to the grid in the early to mid-2030s. Our labs in Richmond, BC, operate Lawson Machine 26 (LM26) to achieve transformational milestones. Learn more at www.generalfusion.com.

Position Overview

As a member of the Applied Physics team, you will contribute to the development of our magnetized target fusion (MTF) power plant. The Plasma Physicist will aid in the analysis of our experimental campaigns, develop models that reconcile experimental results with simulation, and help to inform the direction of future development.

The ideal candidate is self-motivated, has strong communication skills and can stay focused on goals while operating in a fast-paced development environment. They would possess the drive required to work on difficult problems, are excited by alternative and innovative solutions, and are comfortable with working both independently and within a team.

The candidate should have significant experience in modeling magnetized plasma, as well as interpretation of real experimental data in the context of computational models.

Responsibilities
  • Analyze and integrate diagnostic data from General Fusion plasma experiments to develop comprehensive hypotheses for evolution of plasma characteristics and reconcile them with simulation results and reconstructions.
  • Propose new experimental campaigns and corresponding simulations to answer key questions regarding plasma parameter evolution and optimization of MTF targets.
  • Curate and interpret experimental data.
  • Work with the simulation, reconstruction, and diagnostic teams to develop dynamic models of spherical tokamak (ST) plasmas under compression.
  • Communicate your results to both technical and non-technical audiences via in-person presentations and peer-reviewed papers.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Requirements
  • Ph.D. or equivalent degree in plasma physics, fusion science, or closely related field; ~1-3 years relevant industry or post-doctoral experience preferred.
  • Strong background and experience in fusion science and magnetized plasma research.
  • Strong grasp of plasma theory. Must be able to apply relevant theory to develop models of the experimental system as well as to contribute to technological innovations.
  • Experience working in a multidisciplinary research environment.
  • Proven ability to work in a team setting.
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to engage effectively with the team.
  • Experience in programming using Python, MATLAB or C++. Fluency in Python and MATLAB.
  • Experience in modeling the MHD behavior of spherical tokamak (ST) or other self-organized plasmas with existing plasma codes such as NIMROD, Flash.
What We Offer
  • Flexible hours
  • Four weeks\' vacation
  • Comprehensive benefits package.
  • RRSP contribution
  • Support for professional development
  • Great company culture - social events, food trucks, bike rides, Sun Run, etc.
