About the Mental Health Nurse Role

CASA Mental Health Classrooms are CASA’s new model for school-based mental health service. CASA Classrooms are delivered in partnership with the Government of Alberta, community partners and school divisions. This role follows the school year schedule, running from August to June.

The Mental Health Nurse will:

  • Complete appropriate nursing assessments (physical and psychosocial) to identify mental health concerns and current risks. This includes:
    • Incorporating objective findings such as laboratory results, diagnostic findings, specialist reports and past history.
    • Integrating assessment and other data to establish appropriate long and short-term goals, and providing nursing interventions to promote, maintain and restore health.

  • Provide information and instructions to assist others in understanding the clinical condition, ongoing care and management.
  • Assist with individual or group therapy.
  • Liaise with other professionals to promote continuity of care and assist families with connecting to a primary care physician.
  • Act as a resource by providing training to team members to assist in their professional development and participating in the development of children’s mental health teaching and resource materials.
  • Practice according to the code of ethics and practice standards of their specific nursing college.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Knowledge of the Health Information and Protection of Privacy Information Acts in addition to professional organization’s ethics and standards of practice.
  • Respect for and understanding of confidentiality, and an ability to maintain confidentiality regarding personal and sensitive information.
  • Familiarity with electronic medical records or similar information systems.
  • Ability to apply theoretical knowledge in a clinical setting, utilize relevant research findings in daily nursing practice, identify barriers and facilitate solution development, and to work independently and within a team to prioritize work activities.
  • Commitment to continuous quality improvement and engaging in continuous learning opportunities for personal and professional growth.
  • Ability to make evidence-based decisions, work across programs and services, and to work and communicate in a cooperative, respective manner with all staff.
  • Knowledge of family therapy and group therapy is an asset.
Qualifications and Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in nursing.
  • A minimum of three to five years of recent pediatric experience in an ambulatory care setting which has included the care and management of children with mental health problems. Acute care experience in children’s mental health would be an asset.
  • Must be a member in good standing with the College of Registered Nurses of Alberta or College of Registered Psychiatric Nurses of Alberta.
  • Valid Class 5 driver’s license and access to a vehicle.
Conditions of Employment
  • A satisfactory Criminal Records Check with Vulnerable Sector Search. This would be the financial responsibility of the successful candidate.
