A leading nuclear technology organization in Chalk River is seeking a Director of Corporate Environmental Protection. This role requires strategic leadership in environmental initiatives, compliance management, and relationship-building with Indigenous Communities. Ideal candidates will have at least 10 years of progressive leadership in complex industrial environments and a relevant degree in science or engineering. The position also requires eligibility for Level 2 Secret clearance and a strong grasp of environmental laws and best practices. This role plays a critical part in ensuring environmental excellence and safety operations.

At our Chalk River location, we are seeking a Director, Corporate Environmental Protection to provide strategic leadership and effective support across all CNL sites. This role plays a critical part in ensuring environmental excellence while enabling safe, efficient business operations. Apply today and help shape the future of environmental protection at CNL.

What will you be doing!
  • Overseeing the development and implementation of CNL’s Environmental Management System.
  • Directing the management and execution of compliance activities related to effluent, environmental, and groundwater monitoring programs and environmental risk assessments.
  • Overseeing project reviews and field oversight of projects at CNL sites that require an environmental review.
  • Establishing and fostering meaningful, collaborative working relationships with Indigenous Communities to enable continuous dialogue.
  • Providing strategic guidance to projects on requirements generated through relationship agreements between CNL and Indigenous Communities.
  • Prioritizing assignments and deliverables to manage and maintain effective progress.
  • Optimizing the way all resources are used, including people, equipment, and technology, to drive the best value for the dollar.
  • Developing procedural documents and overseeing implementation.
  • Planning and performing programmatic assessments and audits associated with their function to ensure corporate assurance.
  • Conducting field visits and validation activities.
  • Implementing efficiency improvements, developing program budgets and managing with approved budgets.
  • Other duties as assigned by your manager.
What we are looking for:
  • Education
    • A relevant university degree in science or engineering, or equivalent experience in a nuclear environment, is required.
  • Experience
    • A minimum of 10 years of demonstrated, progressive leadership experience in an environmental protection role within a highly complex, multi-site, industrial environment.
  • Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
    • Demonstrated ability to provide strategic oversight.
    • Ability to influence and negotiate effectively and achieve results through others without any direct line authority.
    • Sound knowledge of legal and other requirements and the regulatory framework as they pertain to environmental protection and Environmental, Social, Governance (ESG) strategies (e.g., Nuclear Safety and Control Act, Environmental Protection Act, Canadian Assessment Act, Fisheries Act) and associated regulations made under these Acts.
    • Ability to organize information, assess complex issues and high-risk impacts, and take action within broad organization objectives dealing with a variety of diverse technical, complex organizational and economic challenges.
    • Financial understanding (including Earned Value Management Systems) is required to review and understand the financial performance of a complex organization.
    • Ability to understand business cases from a financial basis. Manages and ensures the division operates within budget and reports on EVMS performance.
    • In-depth knowledge of compliance programs, in particular Environmental Management Systems (EMS) and ISO-14001 requirements.
  • Security Clearance Eligibility Required
    • Level 2 Secret requires a minimum of 7 years of verifiable history in Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the United States, and/or the United Kingdom. CNL implements security screening in accordance with the Treasury Board of Canada Secretariat's “Standard on Security Screening” and the “Policy on Government Security.”
Working Conditions:
  • Ability to be on call and available to respond to crisis events at any time, day or night.
  • Regular travel is required, sometimes on short notice.
