The Laboratory Supervisor - Terminals is responsible for management and oversight of laboratory operations across Hardisty and Edmonton, including quality management systems, laboratory development, and reporting, in coordination with internal and external stakeholders. Acts as the subject matter expert in product quality management related to blending, optimization, and compliance. Accountable for the performance and development of laboratory staff and ensuring results are generated in a cost-effective and safe manner.
What You'll Be Doing

- Building a collaborative, innovative team to exceed customer expectations (internal and external).
- Communicating the company’s vision and strategy in relatable terms.
- Creating an environment of engagement for team members to produce high-quality services.
- Providing leadership in establishing, maintaining, and monitoring safety culture within the lab teams.
- Developing and maintaining the Lab Competency Management Development System (CMDS).
- Overseeing quality control processes, ensuring compliance with internal and external requirements, and liaising directly with customers and suppliers on product quality concerns.
- Managing third-party laboratory sampling and testing.
- Maintaining familiarity with current testing requirements and manufacturer-recommended procedures regarding operation, calibration, and maintenance of instruments.
- Identifying, designing, and organizing laboratory studies and reviewing reports for content and acceptability.
- Implementing new programs, tests, methods, instrumentation, and procedures by investigating alternatives; preparing proposals; developing and performing parallel testing.
- Maintaining a safe working environment in compliance with applicable standards and best lab practices.
- Communicating effectively and distributing lab performance indicators to internal groups as required.
- Developing and managing budgetary and resource plans with respect to lab assets and services.
- Leading the laboratory team, providing guidance, development, and performance management, scheduling, and other supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the Association CBA.
- Acting as a quality subject matter expert of the QM team to provide guidance on product quality-related issues and initiatives to both internal and external customers.
- Providing input and expertise into expansion and development projects, relating to quality/sampling system design and implementation.
- Monitoring and communicating changes to stream quality specifications and/or requirements to affected stakeholders to maintain stream quality compliance for the refinery.
- Owning the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) database, including configuration, reporting tools, and system interfaces.
- Ensuring TDG compliance with respect to Gibson product movements.
- Investigating and reporting on internal and external quality infractions and contamination events.
- Planning, executing, and reporting on external and internal audit activities related to lab operations and product quality.
- Maintaining professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops, reviewing professional publications, establishing personal networks, and participating in industry technical groups.
- Maintaining and developing working relationships with third-party testing facilities and monitoring process performance.
- Demonstrating a personal commitment and proactive approach to Environment, Health & Safety (EH&S) through participation in all applicable EH&S programs and ensuring safe operation of the branch, team, or unit and compliance with all company EH&S policies and procedures.
- May perform other duties as assigned.
What You'll Bring
- Bachelor of Science in Chemistry or related program, or Chemical Technology Diploma.
- Petroleum laboratory experience is preferred.
- Knowledge of ASTM testing standards for both hydrocarbon products.
- Working knowledge of quality management systems and processes relating to ISO 17025 or ISO 9001.
- Understanding of chemistry behind applicable lab processes as it relates to product quality.
- Knowledge in LIMS utilization, control charting functions, development, and system interfaces.
- Analytical understanding of data output, repeatability, reproducibility, and uncertainty statements.
- Knowledge of hydrocarbon quality specifications and industry guidelines.
- Knowledge of custody transfer processes and system design impacts on quality sampling and analysis.
- Ability to work and contribute in a team environment while independently managing multiple and competing priorities.
- Proficiency with MS Outlook, Excel, Word, SharePoint, One-Drive, and Power BI.
- Excellent communication skills both verbally and written.
- Proven analytical and problem-solving skills, and flexibility to adapt to a changing environment.
- Ability to liaise with all levels of the organization in various geographic locations.
- Self-motivated and able to work independently with internal and external groups.
- Valid driver’s license.
Working Conditions
- Travel approximately 10-25%.
- Approximately 50% of the position in a lab environment, and 50% in an office environment, subject to changing business requirements.
- Sampling in the field and exposure to weather elements for short durations.
- Availability outside of working hours for safety and operational concerns.
- Subject to background checks as outlined in Gibson Energy’s Background Checks policy, which may include drug & alcohol testing, employment verification, references, education verification, driver’s license check, and criminal history check.
