EY’s multidisciplinary Business Tax Incentives (BTI) team, part of our Business Tax Services practice, specializes in credits and grants related to discretionary incentives, sustainability, capital investments, and scientific research and experimental development (SRED). We are a diverse group of professionals working with companies of all sizes across various industries to maximize their tax benefits and achieve their business objectives. We are seeking a Tax Manager to join our Calgary team.

The opportunity

As a BTI Sustainability Manager, you will develop expertise in tax policy and understand Canada's clean energy transition, focusing on the Government of Canada's Clean Economy Investment Tax Credits (ITCs). You will help companies navigate and maximize these incentives, such as the refundable 30% credit supporting clean technology adoption like PV systems, wind energy, and energy storage. Your role involves assessing project eligibility, optimizing tax strategies, and contributing to Canada's clean energy initiatives.

Core responsibilities include:

  • Reviewing clients’ project financial summaries and ensuring accurate classification of costs according to legislative guidance.
  • Assessing investment costs for tax credit eligibility and analyzing relevant legislation.
  • Interpreting technical project details and collaborating with engineers to align technical and tax classifications.
  • Drafting technical analyses, legislative references, and conclusions for client tax memos.
  • Providing high-quality, timely services that exceed client expectations.
  • Mentoring junior staff to ensure accurate and complete work.
  • Staying updated on legislative developments and applying them to complex client situations.
  • Identifying opportunities for additional tax services.
  • Contributing to thought leadership materials.
  • Maintaining professionalism and confidentiality in client relationships and work products.

Skills and qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, law, or relevant discipline.
  • 4+ years’ experience in SRED or Canadian corporate tax.
  • Professional credentials such as CPA, CPA In-depth Tax Course, Master’s in Taxation, or Master of Tax Law are assets.
  • Motivation and commitment to learning in a tax technology environment.
  • Strong project management and organizational skills with ability to meet deadlines.
  • Process-oriented with excellent documentation skills.
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills.
