About the Role :
The Café Attendant-Prep Cook is responsible for assisting with customer service at the point-of-sale station, food production, and overall café operations including menu planning, procurement, and kitchen. This role is the primary point of contact for service users, ensuring a high level of customer support and satisfaction by preparing coffee and food to order, managing inventory, and maintaining food safety standards.

Responsibilities and Tasks :
Customer Service
- Serve as the main point of service contact, assisting guests in selecting food and beverage items, entering orders into a point-of-sale system, processing payments, ensuring proper cash handling and end of day reconciliation.
- Maintain strong interpersonal and conversational skills to make all guests feel welcome and informed about the menu offerings, including knowledge of ingredients.
- Execute thorough pre- and post-café cleaning duties, including safe food storage, sanitizing surfaces, organizing dining areas, and maintaining cleanliness standards to uphold a hygienic environment for both staff and customers.
Food Operations
- Efficiently and accurately prepare espresso-based drinks, as well as working with apprentices gaining barista and Café Attendant experience (as applicable).
- Operate equipment to prepare, warm up, and ensure the freshness of food items for café service users.
- The Café Attendant-Prep Cook maintains the order counter area and stocking of items on display, ensuring products are fresh and well organized.
- The Café Attendant-Prep Cook ensures that the café is ready for service each morning and properly secured after hours.
- The Café Attendant-Prep Cook is involved in food preparation for the Acute Respite Care (ARC) unit and various community programming.
- Promote safety of clients and staff by ensuring compliance with organizational health and safety policies and safe food handling practices.
- Maintain a clean and safe dining environment and respond to concerns, complaints, and issues identified.
- Use equipment, materials, and protective devices according to safe operating procedures.
Administration
- Participate in menu planning, procurement, and kitchen support to ensure efficient café operations.
- Assist in providing training and support to apprentices in developing their culinary and customer service skills.
- Maintain inventory control, including waste tracking, and comply with all legislated safety regulations for food handling and workplace safety.
- Attend and participate in Sherbourne meetings assigned by the management.
To Thrive in This Role, You’ll Need :
Education / Experience / Skills / Abilities :
- Minimum of a high school diploma or equivalent, with two to three years of culinary experience.
- Food Handlers certification is an asset.
- Minimum of one year’s experience in handling cash and serving customers.
- Familiarity with POS systems is an asset.
- Experience as a barista is an asset.
- Strong interpersonal and conversational skills.
- Good organizational and time management skills.
- Ability to work the variable hours of the role in a kitchen / café environment.

Working Conditions :
- Work is performed in a health care and community-based setting.
- Work hours for this role fluctuate as per program and operational priorities, though café hours typically align with standard business hours (Monday to Friday, 9 : 00 am to 5 : 00 pm).
- Working conditions include hot temperatures consistent with a standard kitchen environment, regular walking and standing, handling of hot and cold food items, and exposure to sharp kitchen equipment.
- Occasional lifting / ability to lift up to 40 lbs as needed.
