A leading educational institution in Toronto seeks an Assistant Professor specializing in Political Philosophy or History of Modern Philosophy. The Department of Philosophy at the University of Toronto Scarborough (UTSC) invites applications for a full-time tenure stream position in Political Philosophy or History of Modern Philosophy. The appointment will be at the rank of Assistant Professor, with an anticipated start date of July 1, 2026.
Candidates must have earned a PhD degree in Philosophy or a closely related field by the time of appointment, or shortly thereafter, with a demonstrated record of excellence in research and teaching. Applicants must specialize in either Political Philosophy or in an area of the History of Modern Philosophy. The successful candidate will be expected to pursue innovative and independent research and to establish an outstanding, competitive, and externally funded research program.
Evidence of excellence in teaching will be demonstrated through teaching accomplishments, the teaching dossier (with required materials outlined below) submitted as part of the application, as well as strong letters of reference. The candidate should show a commitment to equity, diversity, inclusion and to promoting a respectful and collegial learning and working environment.
Responsibilities: Pursue innovative and independent research and establish a competitive, externally funded research program; contribute to teaching and supervision within the department; participate in graduate teaching and supervision as appropriate at UTSC and the tri-campus Graduate Department of Philosophy.
Qualifications: PhD in Philosophy or closely related field by start date or shortly thereafter; specialization in Political Philosophy or History of Modern Philosophy; evidence of research excellence (publications in top-ranked journals or forthcoming high-quality work, a strong research statement, conference presentations, awards, and endorsements from referees); evidence of teaching excellence through teaching dossier and reference letters; demonstrated commitment to equity, diversity, inclusion and a respectful academic environment.
The University of Toronto has three campuses—St. George, Scarborough, and Mississauga—each with its own Department of Philosophy. The advertised position is at the Scarborough Campus. The Tri-Campus Graduate Department of Philosophy is widely recognized as Canada’s best and most comprehensive philosophy department and an international leader in the field.
