Job summary

A recruitment agency is seeking a Water Resource Engineer for a client based in Sandton. Job description

Red Ember recruitment is recruiting for a Water Resource Engineer for our client in Sandton.

Hydrological Analysis Responsibilities
  • Acquisition and processing of hydrological data (rainfall, runoff, evaporation)
  • Determination of hydrological parameters (e.g. MAP, MAE, MAR)
  • Catchment delineation
  • Surface‑water runoff calculations (e.g. MAR seasonal and dry‑weather flows) for site‑specific catchment areas
  • Flood‑peak runoff calculations using industry‑acceptable deterministic, statistical, empirical and dynamic modelling methods
  • Water‑balance analysis and modelling under conservation‑of‑mass principles, including dam sizing
  • Reservoir and canal routing, dynamic water‑level analysis
  • Floodline determination
  • Surface‑water impact assessment
  • Flood‑risk and flood‑hazard assessment
Hydraulic Analysis & Design Responsibilities
  • Water‑surface backwater profiling for flood‑line modelling
  • Flood attenuation in reservoirs or upstream of culverts, including volume attenuation and peak‑flow reduction
  • Canal flow calculations based on hydraulic theory for free‑surface flow
  • Spillway design, hydraulic optimisation with flood routing and attenuation calculations
  • Design of energy‑dissipating and erosion‑control structures
  • Dam‑break analysis
Additional Technical & Personal Skills
  • Good understanding of surface‑water management in mining and industrial contexts
  • Working knowledge of legislation, regulations and guidelines for water management in mining and industry
  • Excellent written and spoken English, including technical report writing
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to collaborate effectively in a team
  • Demonstrated project‑management experience
Educational and Experience Requirements
  • BSc Eng (Civil) / BEng (Civil)
  • Preferably MSc or MEng in Hydrology and Hydraulics
  • 5 to 7 years of relevant experience
  • Valid South‑African driver’s licence
Software Proficiency
  • General: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Project, AutoCAD (Civil 3D)
  • Specialised: GoldSim, PCSWMM, HEC‑RAS, UPFLOOD, WRSM2005, Flo‑2D, QGIS / ArcGIS, ModelMaker
  • Advantageous: Programming/coding experience in Visual Basic or Python
