Role Summary

Level: Executive
Number: Looking for two UCT students
Reports to: Management of SHAWCO and the Board of SHAWCO
Closing date: 23:55 on Friday 1st of October

SHAWCO is a student‑run volunteer society, and a standalone Non‑profit Organisation (NPO).

Overview

This duality allows SHAWCO Education the unique opportunity to engage in a variety of projects and programmes.

The overall goal for SHAWCO Education is to help support students (high school and university), in as many ways as possible. The Vice‑President (VP) oversees the societal side of SHAWCO Education.

Key Responsibilities

All the activities SHAWCO performs as a UCT society.

This would involve planning, facilitating and monitoring the activities of SHAWCO's volunteers and Senior Leadership (SL).

Due to this role, the VP will need to be confident while interacting with a wide variety of people and situations.

The VP will be trained, guided and assisted to offer the best opportunity to perform their roles.

This planning can take the following forms:

  • Attending, chairing and leading meetings with SHAWCO volunteers
  • Attending meetings to plan for SHAWCO Education projects and programmes
  • Collecting and summarising all relevant information, involving SHAWC's societal activities, then informing the President who will be busy with SHAWCO's Non‑Profit activities
  • Meetings with other UCT societies, to discuss potential partnerships
  • Act as a central point of communications between SHAWCO's board and SHAWCO's volunteers
  • Help optimise the overall quality of the participant experience
  • Act as the guide to ensure volunteers help to achieve SHAWCO's goals
  • Assume duties to support the President, as delegated by the President
  • Perform various representative and ceremonial functions
Projects

Current and potential projects SHAWCO will engage in include:

  • Mental Health Workshops for students and volunteers
  • Matric Support Initiative (MSI), which provides support for Matric students
  • Mentor and mentee programmes
  • Digital Literacy – a programme to improve the computer literacy levels of students
  • Reading Programme – a short project run in Hout Bay to help students enjoy reading
  • Bank – a long‑term drive to ensure volunteers receive the full benefits of being a SHAWCO volunteer

Requirements

Be a UCT student in the year

  • Have a demonstrated history of leadership experience
  • Have a good academic standing
  • Have the ability to represent the sector of SHAWCO Education, and SHAWCO the organisation
  • Have ability to think critically and strategically, considering various perspectives and factors simultaneously, to solve problems
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to cooperate in a team
  • Ability to interact with SHAWCO volunteers online
Time Commitments

General presence and availability in the office

  • Weekly executive meetings (± 2 hours)
  • Bi‑weekly senior leadership meetings (± 1 hour)
  • Meetings to manage the SHAWCO society (± 3 hours per week)
  • Helping to create, edit or interact with SHAWCO‑related documents (e.g., project / programme board reports) (± 2 hours per week)

In total, the VP will need to engage ± 8 hours of SHAWCO work per week.
