Job description
Travel and Tourism - Business Development Manager

The main objective of this role is to explore, plan and carry out business development, direct marketing and sales related activities.

The role also requires developing and growing sales for the business in the South African market, managing quality and consistency of service levels and ensuring positive promotion of the brand into the targeted market.

Responsibilities
  • New Business Development
  • Research and build relationships with new clients.
  • Keep abreast with new technology and changes within the industry.
  • Keeping up with current trends and identifying business growth opportunities.
  • Present to and consult with management on market trends and information feedback.
  • Prospect for potential clients and turn this into increased business.
  • Meet with current and potential clients by growing, leveraging and maintaining networks.
  • Effectively build sustainable long-term client relationships.
  • Develop a structured and effective marketing and client support strategy.
  • Close new business deals by coordinating requirements, developing and negotiating contracts, integrating contract requirements with business operations.
  • Supporting with the tendering process.
  • Attend industry functions, such as association events and conferences, and provide feedback and information on market and creative trends.
  • Identify opportunities for campaigns that will lead to an increase in sales.
  • Using knowledge of the market and competitors, identify and develop the company's unique selling propositions and differentiators.
Bid Process Management
  • Coordinate the preparation and submission of key proposals.
  • Lead the proposal process for a number of key or complex tenders.
  • Work with Staff Consultants and the Finance Team to develop budgets and present financial information for proposals.
  • Monitor the implementation of the bidding process, identifying opportunities to improve bidding efficiency.
  • Monitor, report on and improve efficiency of the bidding process.
  • Monitor and provide regular reports to the Senior Management Team on pipeline of work and proposal costs.
  • Lead the bid review process, ensuring that internal bid debriefs are held where appropriate and lessons are shared across the company.
  • Ensure feedback on won and lost tenders is routinely collected, filed, analysed and used to improve future bidding.
  • Manage the process of identifying bidding opportunities.
Client Retention, Risk Management and Reporting
  • Meet existing clients to identify challenges and or additional requirements.
  • Work closely with internal colleagues to understand and meet client's needs.
  • Participate in management meetings and submit weekly and monthly data to ensure data accuracy.
  • Forecast sales targets for the year and ensure they are met.
  • Compile key business metrics and report on them to management.
  • Work with the Senior Management Team to provide strategic guidance on Business Development.
  • Produce and lead the implementation of an annual BD business plan.
  • Lead the process for the preparation of BD presentations at Company Business Days.
  • Alert the management to key emerging risk areas.
  • Make input to improve risk mitigation strategies.
  • Actively participate in crisis management activities as and when required.
People Management
  • Develop a strong sales culture and create mechanisms to ensure seamless communication within the department.
  • Develop sales targets for each team member and design and implement an incentive structure that meets the needs of both the business and the employee.
  • Provide strong coaching and mentoring of the business development team.
  • To recruit and induct all employees.
  • To conduct regular and timely performance appraisals and team meetings.
  • To identify personal development opportunities and coordinate training needs.
  • To always lead by example.
  • Regularly evaluate systems and processes to ensure that maximum efficiency is achieved.
Qualification Criteria
  • Bachelor Degree in Marketing / Business Management / Relevant degree.
  • At least 10 years of work experience in a similar role.
  • Minimum 5 years' experience in management, or customer services.
  • Proven track record of success in a business development or sales role, preferably within the travel and tourism industry.
  • Strong knowledge of the corporate travel, including market dynamics and key players.
  • Experience as a Business Development Manager in the tourism / travel industry.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and manage a successful sale focused team.
  • Marketing and product development experience.
