SGS South Africa, Matrolab Division, is seeking to fill a key role in its Civil Engineering Site Laboratories. The role involves, but is not limited to, providing, implementing, and managing a laboratory production plan as per site requirements. The Site Laboratory Manager will ensure all client communication is relayed to the relevant Regional Manager and that requests are acted upon, while maintaining discipline on site.

The ideal candidate will possess strong leadership skills, integrity, and good interpersonal skills, enabling them to command respect and maintain good staff relationships. The candidate should have a proven track record of delivering performance against strategic objectives, ensuring all quality and testing methods are observed, with deviations reported promptly.

Job Responsibilities:

  1. Manage laboratory production planning on-site and ensure deadlines are met.
  2. Liaise effectively with clients and the relevant regional manager.
  3. Ensure accurate reporting before signing and distribution.
  4. Implement quality control systems and adhere to Health and Safety regulations in the laboratory.
  5. Oversee multidisciplinary site laboratories, including soils, concrete, asphalt, seals, and aggregates.
  6. Comply with all SGS quality and safety requirements.
  7. Assist technicians with tasks on-site or in the laboratory as instructed by the authorized supervisor or laboratory manager.
  8. Perform additional tasks as assigned by supervisors or regional managers.
  9. Follow all SGS policies and procedures, including payroll, leave, and disciplinary procedures.
  10. Provide training to staff based on identified needs.
  11. Ensure completion of all mandatory SGS training programs.
  12. Submit timesheets, claim forms, and payroll instructions punctually.

Qualifications:

  1. Relevant National Diploma or NQF 6 / Grade 12 / NQF 4 equivalent, or recognized through Prior Learning.
  2. Valid driver’s license.
  3. Relevant National Diploma with ten years of experience, or NQF 6 with ten years of experience.
  4. Grade 12 with fifteen years of relevant experience, or NQF 4 with fifteen years of relevant experience.

Additional Requirements:

  1. Competent and qualified to perform tests across all laboratory divisions including soils, asphalt, seals, concrete, and aggregates.
  2. Skilled in laboratory quality control and implementation.
  3. Capable of supervising and executing fieldwork.
  4. Familiar with COLTO standards.
  5. Knowledgeable in Health and Safety protocols.
  6. Proficient in conducting tests (TMH 1 and SANS) in all laboratory divisions.
  7. Computer literate (Word, Excel, Outlook).
