Job Description

As a Professional In Training (PIT): Environment, you will gain the technical and practical experience required for SACNSP or HPCSA registration through structured training, site exposure, and active participation in environmental monitoring, compliance, and sustainability projects. In this role, you will be immersed in all facets of environmental management, with a primary focus on developing and implementing procedures, management plans, and systems to enhance environmental performance. Safety is paramount, and you\'ll actively showcase safety leadership and engage in company safety initiatives. Your responsibilities will extend to risk management assurance and governance, ensuring compliance with safety standards through risk assessment strategies and safety critical controls.

This is an exciting opportunity for graduates who want to have a smarter future within mining. Initially, you will be offered a three-year graduate programme with our Southern Africa Business Unit rotating to one or more of our sites where possible. Key outputs

As a Professional-In-Training (PIT) Environment, your key outputs will include but not limited to:

  • Supporting the development and implementation of environmental procedures, management plans, and systems.
  • Contribute to initiatives that enhance environmental performance across operations.
  • Demonstrate visible felt leadership in safety practices.
  • Actively participate in company safety initiatives and promote a culture of safety.
  • Apply risk assessment strategies and implement safety-critical controls.
  • Conduct inspections to ensure compliance with environmental systems, guidelines, and codes of practice.
  • Use approved environmental tools and databases to generate quarterly and annual reports.
  • Ensure accuracy and completeness in all environmental reporting.
  • Develop and deliver environmental awareness and capacity-building programmes.
  • Create and implement improvement and awareness plans for air, biodiversity, rehabilitation, closure, water, soil, and waste.
  • Advise on environmental training, education, and development initiatives.
  • Apply environmental practices and technologies to deliver professional services to stakeholders.
  • Support internal and external communications related to site environmental monitoring and compliance.
  • Promote a culture of environmental excellence aligned with the organisation’s strategic goals.
  • Drive initiatives that support long-term sustainability and performance.
  • Provide accurate data on short- and long-term environmental impacts.
  • Use data analytics tools to support proactive mitigation and science-based decision-making.
  • Demonstrate learning outcomes and execution of environmental tasks.
  • Clearly articulate the value added or risk mitigated through PIT activities.
  • Prepare and present quarterly PIT reports for management review and rating.
  • Show understanding of interdisciplinary collaboration and its impact on environmental outcomes.
Qualifications

To qualify for the Professional In Training programme, you must:

  • Have completed a B.Sc. Degree (NQF7 or 8) in Environmental management or equivalent qualification.
  • Have no more than two years of relevant work experience.
  • Be available to work in remote areas of South Africa as our operations are in the Northern Cape and you will be located in Sishen or Kolomela mine.
  • Be medically fit
  • Hold a SA Drivers Licence as the role requires a high level of mobility
What to Expect
  • The role is a fixed term contract for a maximum period of 36 months.
  • The role of a Professional In Training is to participate in and complete the formal Graduate Programme as outlined per discipline.
  • The first stage of the recruitment process is a review of your CV.
  • Should you meet the requirements for the role, you will be invited to interview. Upon successful completion of the interview, you will progress to the psychometric assessments, which are to be completed by set deadline.
