Principal Planner – Town of South Kingston, RI

Under the general supervision of the Director of Planning, this position performs professional planning work in support of the Town’s land use, development review, and long‑range planning initiatives.

Responsibilities
  • Review and process land development and subdivision applications.
  • Assist with the implementation of the Comprehensive Community Plan, Multi‑Hazard Mitigation Plan, Harbor Management Plan, and other planning programs.
  • Draft zoning ordinance amendments.
  • Conduct site inspections and impact analyses.
  • Staff and serve as liaison to boards and commissions.
  • Coordinate with local, state, and federal agencies.
  • Support community sustainability efforts.
  • Manage special projects and consultants.
  • Prepare grant applications and complete required reporting.
  • Perform other related duties consistent with the position.

Work hours: 35 hours a week (SKMEA Union position). Monday through Friday, 8:30 am to 4:30 pm with a one‑hour unpaid lunch break. Attendance at meetings or tasks outside these hours may be required.

Compensation: $48.02 – $52.97 hourly, $87,394 – $96,413 annually.

Qualifications

Under the general supervision of the Director of Planning, the holder will perform various planning related duties including, but not limited to, the processing and review of land development and subdivision applications; assisting with the development of planning policies and actions; staffing boards and commissions; working with the Town’s Geographic Information System (GIS); undertaking special projects; writing grants and completing grant‑related paperwork; and supporting the Planning Department on various matters.
