Job summary

A mining company in Hotazel is seeking a Plant Chargehand to supervise and coordinate daily operations and maintenance activities. Responsibilities include leading a maintenance team, ensuring equipment reliability, and enforcing safety standards. The ideal candidate will have at least 4 years of experience in a mining environment, a relevant trade qualification, and strong leadership skills. This position requires excellent problem-solving abilities and effective communication with various departments.

Qualifications

  • At least 4 years’ experience as a Qualified Artisan in a mining environment.
  • At least 1 year of Supervisory experience.
  • Knowledge of plant machinery such as crushers, conveyors, screens, pumps.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise and coordinate maintenance operations of the plant section.
  • Lead a team of artisans and general workers in plant maintenance.
  • Conduct inspections and fault finding on mechanical and electrical plant equipment.
  • Ensure planned maintenance is executed according to schedules.
  • Provide training and mentoring to junior staff.

Overview

Kalagadi Manganese Mine is situated in the town of Hotazel 70km west from Kuruman, Northern Province.

Purpose and role in the business

To supervise and coordinate the day-to-day maintenance and operations activities of the plant section, ensuring that machinery and equipment are maintained in a safe, reliable, and efficient condition in line with production and safety targets. The incumbent assists and reports to the Foreman

Key results areas
  • Have knowledge and skill in applying leadership techniques to individuals and teams within the work context
  • Assist the Foreman with daily inspection checklist for tools, equipment and work areas
  • Supervise and lead a team of artisans and general workers in the plant maintenance section.
  • Delegate tasks and ensure daily job cards are completed on time and correctly.
  • Conduct inspections and basic fault finding on mechanical and electrical plant equipment.
  • Ensure planned maintenance is carried out according to the maintenance schedule.
  • Assist in the installation, repair, and overhaul of mechanical plant components.
  • Monitor equipment performance and report recurring problems to the Foreman.
  • Enforce safety procedures and housekeeping standards in the plant.
  • Ensure compliance with relevant SOPs and company standards.
  • Maintain maintenance records and report on team productivity and downtime causes.
  • Provide on-the-job training and mentoring to junior staff.
  • Liaise with other departments to minimize production disruptions.
  • Communicate operational information and changes to relevant stakeholder to minimize delays
  • Be able to perform resource planning and ensure availability thereof
  • Ability to conduct a start of shift inspection
  • Demonstrate knowledge and skill with regards to plant capacities
  • Meet operational targets and objectives to meet
  • Propose ideas or practical improvements relevant to tasks. Participate in improvement initiatives
  • Comply with quality standards and deliver in a manner that support and meet operational quality standards

  • Be able to ensure that everybody on shift know and understand how to perform their duties
  • Demonstrate knowledge and skill with regards to safety principles and practices in the workplace

  • Co-ordinate shift hand over at the beginning of each shift by checking log sheets, physical mining activities, and communicate to relevant subordinates

  • Demonstrate knowledge and skill in interaction management

Experience
