Job description
Position Purpose

The Maintenance Supervisor / Manager assumes full ownership for ensuring and improving the performance, productivity, efficiency and profitability of the relevant functional area through the provision of effective methods, strategies and relentless execution.

Responsibilities
  • Adhering to all Astec's safety standards, culture and expectations at all times, creating a safe working environment for all.
  • Ability to communicate well with all other departments involved in the manufacturing process.
  • Carrying out inspections of the facility to identify and resolve items in need of repair.
  • Performing inspections of overhead cranes by means of load tests and ensuring all relevant documentation is completed and required maintenance is performed.
  • Adhering to all statutory tests and requirements of machinery and equipment.
  • Driving Lean, 5S and Safety culture.
  • Planning the use of resources in the relevant area of the factory by means of performance management, effective supervision, recruitment processes, disciplinary measures, training needs analysis and work schedules in conjunction with the HR department.
  • Understanding and employing the company's disciplinary code when required.
  • Engage team on KPIs and driving hard to achievement of them.
  • Planning and overseeing all repairs and installation activities on buildings, machinery and relevant equipment.
  • Being able to make quick decisions to adjust for constraints, ensuring that the production demand is still met.
  • Able to lead an assembly team working on various maintenance activities at the same time.
  • Formulation and implementing departmental and organizational policies and procedures to maximize output.
  • Monitoring adherence to rules, regulations, SOPs and procedures.
  • Managing employees in a manner that contributes to the employee engagement strategy of the Company.
  • Monitoring expenses and controlling the maintenance budget.
  • Preparing Capex justifications for implementation where and when required.
  • Contractor management throughout the factory.
  • Keeping and updating all maintenance logs and reports.
  • Carrying out preventative maintenance functions to ensure maximum availability for production of all machinery.
  • Ensuring that jobs are completed efficiently and within standard times (on time delivery).
  • Diagnosing electrical, pneumatic and hydraulic problems in order to repair plant and machinery.
  • Ability to read technical drawings.
  • Conducting studies per machine and drawing up related maintenance schedules and checklists.
  • Operating and managing the planned maintenance system, extracting information and generating relevant reports.
  • Performing a variety of plumbing and carpentry functions.
  • Ensuring that all maintenance processes, procedures and documentation is ISO and OHSA compliant.
  • Communicate with other departments concerning work to be done in their areas, possible interruptions to production and general activities taking place.
  • Ensuring that the Key Performance Indicators for the department are understood, adhered to and measured.
  • Ensuring OTD targets are achieved.
  • Ensuring that human resources are effectively utilized in the department at all times.
  • Ensuring compliance to QMS standards.
Qualifications
  • Qualified artisan in the fields of mechanical, electrical engineering essential or both (millwright).
  • A tertiary qualification in engineering would be beneficial (at least level N5 or T3).
  • A tertiary qualification in production management or equivalent would be highly advantageous.
  • At least 5 years' experience in a heavy engineering manufacturing environment with related equipment experience.
  • At least 5 years previous experience in supervision / management in a maintenance environment.
  • Management of contractors – essential.
  • Previous experience in working in a unionized environment.
  • Highly driven individual with well-developed sense of urgency and a passion for meeting targets as presented.
  • Excellent communicator.
  • Planning and organising skills.
  • Able to make quick decisions in a high-pressure environment.
  • Computer proficiency: MS Office.
  • Intermediate Computer Proficiency on Microsoft AX.
  • The ability to operate and draw reports / data from the ERP system.
  • Solid knowledge of the requirements stipulated in the Occupational Health and Safety Act.
  • Solid understanding of labour legislation and staff management principles.
  • Working knowledge of facilities, machines and related equipment.
  • The ability to read, analyse and understand the reports produced from a scheduling system.
  • Knowledge of production methodologies including Lean manufacturing, theory of constraints, etc. would be advantageous.
  • Must be able to read, understand and interpret technical drawings.
  • The ability to read and understand a set of expense accounts.
