Key Responsibilities and Duties
  • Manage the print and virtual library catalogue
  • Check in and out books to students and staff.
  • Manage the virtual library
  • Assist library users on the library database
  • Classify and catalogue new material on the online database for both the physical and virtual library
  • Sort books and publications according to the Dewey System
  • Managing budgets and resources, source new books and book quotations when new books are needed, follow up on requisitions etc.
  • Answer readers queries
  • Liaise and develop relationships with external organisations (for example EBSCOhost) to ensure that the library is efficiently making use of the most competitive and useful databases
  • Guide students on using plagiarism and AI detection services such as Turn-It-In and be able to guide students on the correct referencing of resources.
  • Support students with independent research and learning
  • Assist readers to use computer equipment, conduct literature searches etc. - and ensure all necessary library information is available on the LMS (Moodle)
  • Pro-actively and regularly promote the library's resources and host events as required
  • Pro-actively liaise with academic staff to ensure that the library has the resources they require and to inform them about new resources
  • Ensure the library services meet the needs of various groups of users (e.g postgraduate students, disabled students)
  • On a monthly basis provide the Education Manager and Head of Departments with a report on which resources are being utilised and by whom per programme, per year.
  • Attend weekly faculty meetings with the academic teams and contribute to the academic programme development, implementation and review.
  • Manage the Writing Centre, including the incorporation of workshops related to academic literacy
  • Host academic reading and writing workshops
  • Other ad hoc administration tasks as required
  • Manage and be available on appointment to assist students with academic writing (non-module specific)
Qualifications and Experience
  • An NQF Level 9 qualification, in the field of Librarian Science, is a minimum requirement.
  • Preference will be given to candidates with a Masters degree, or who are registered for a Masters degree nearing completion, in a relevant field
  • Computer skills and experience within Microsoft office
  • Library management system experience
  • Excellent knowledge of the Harvard Referencing system
  • Excellent English language skills - reading and writing. Preference will be given to multilingual candidates
