A well-established Christian non-profit legal advocacy organisation is seeking a committed and highly skilled Legal Advisor (Research and Liaison) to join its dynamic team. The organisation champions and protects the constitutional right to religious freedom in South Africa. Its work includes engaging Parliament, government departments, Chapter 9 institutions, the courts, civil society, and the public to ensure that all people remain free to believe, speak, and live out their faith without fear or interference.

This role requires an individual with a strong passion for advancing religious freedom, excellent legal research and drafting capabilities, and the ability to engage strategically and professionally with government and other key stakeholders.

Responsibilities:

Legislative Monitoring
  • Track Parliamentary developments, including bills, committee meetings, reports, public participation processes, and the ATC.
Executive Monitoring
  • Monitor Government Gazettes, departmental updates, presidential and cabinet statements, policies, and related notices.
  • Track relevant Rule 16A notices and developments on SAFLII.
  • Conduct in-depth legal research and produce briefs, summaries, and analysis.
  • Assist with drafting submissions, presentations, and other legal documents.
  • Assist with oral submissions and presentations.
  • Track and report on legal and policy developments of religious freedom locally and internationally.
  • Build and maintain strategic relationships with parliamentarians, government officials, partners, and constituency groups.
Media, Communications & Public Awareness
  • Assist with media interviews, research briefs, and interview preparation.
  • Support the creation of social media content and online articles.
  • Monitor news, media, and relevant online platforms.
  • Assist in education and awareness initiatives related to religious freedom.
Qualifications

Qualifications

  • Admitted Attorney (required).
  • Advantageous: BA or other bachelor’s degree, LLM, or studies in political science, public policy, or public relations.
  • Fluent in at least one other official South African language (professional and conversational).
  • Additional languages are advantageous.
Skills
  • Strong legal research, analysis, and writing skills.
  • Excellent speaking, presentation, and communication skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, including diplomacy, discretion, and the ability to navigate complex interactions effectively.
  • Proven ability to build and maintain relationships with government and civil society stakeholders.

  • Proficient in MS Office Suite and Zoom.

Experience
  • Experience as a legal advisor.
  • Experience in law and/or policy-related work.
  • Advantageous: Work with Parliament, government departments, Chapter 9 institutions; lobbying; media interviews and public statements.
Special Requirements
  • Reside in or near the greater Cape Town area.
  • Ability to travel locally and nationally, sometimes on short notice.
  • Code B driver’s licence and own reliable transport.
