Job Description

This role is responsible for providing specialist legal support to Old Mutual Corporate across product, distribution, administration/servicing, IT/operations, commercial contracting, and regulatory matters. It also partakes in actions related to legal risk management, regulatory interpretation, technical training, and legal governance.

The incumbent is individually accountable for achieving results through own efforts over periods of up to 3 months and is required to support business stakeholders through legal advice, contract drafting, policy interpretation, process design and regulatory compliance.

Key Result Areas
Legal Advice
  • Provides specialist legal support to business units across Corporate.
  • Drafts, reviews, negotiates and maintains legal and commercial documents (product, IT, admin, consulting and commercial contracts).
  • Provides legal interpretations, written opinions and legislative analysis across FAIS, PFA, COFI, POPIA, FIC Act and other applicable law.
  • Supports product development, pricing reviews, rule amendments and regulatory submissions.
  • Assists with complaints, governance queries and legal escalation matters.
  • Drives or supports legal compliance projects and regulatory readiness initiatives (e.g., COFI, AML/RMCP, BO identification).

  • Provides specialist consulting support to business units.
  • Identifies legal, operational and product-related needs in client areas.
  • Advises on the design and optimisation of legal, regulatory and process frameworks.
  • Provides training, guidance and technical support on legal and regulatory requirements.
Risk Management
  • Contributes to appropriate management of legal and regulatory risk within areas of responsibility.
  • Identifies emerging risks, designs mitigating actions and supports implementation.
  • Provides POPIA, AML, regulatory and contract risk assessments.
  • Initiates action where control failures or legal risks arise, including training and process fixes.
Stakeholder Management
  • Networks with internal and external stakeholders including Product Legal, Group Legal, compliance officers, operations, Next176, OMCC and external vendors.
  • May engage with regulators where required through formal channels.
  • Represents Corporate Legal in governance forums, committees or cross-functional working groups.
