Main purpose of the job
- To provide technical assistance with laboratory-based research experimental procedures
- Specific responsibilities will include supporting laboratory testing to screen two-way and three-way combinations of antifungals in vitro against Cryptococcus as part of the BALANCE project

Key performance areas
The Mycology Division aims to improve the outcomes of people affected by serious, life‑threatening fungal diseases in South Africa and the African region through public health‑focused epidemiological, clinical and basic science research and innovation Our work also stretches to other important infectious diseases
- Culturing of Cryptococcus isolates for BALANCE project
- Prepare custom‑made broth microdilution plates for two and three way antifungal combinations
- Performing broth microdilution testing of two and three way antifungal combinations against Cryptococcus
- Recording and archiving of results
- Reporting of results to line manager
- Tracking project specific consumables
- Take ownership and accountability for tasks and demonstrate effective self management
- Follow through to ensure the quality and productivity standards of own work are consistently and accurately maintained
Required minimum education and training
- BTech or BSc Degree in Medical Microbiology or related field
Professional Body Registration
- 1 year working experience in a Microbiology Laboratory
Required minimum work experience
- 1 year working experience in a Microbiology Laboratory
Desirable additional education, work experience and personal abilities
- Excellent reporting skills
- Effective time management skills
- Good interpersonal and organizational skills
- Ability to work under pressure and being pro‑active
