Job description

The General Manager – Schools is responsible for overseeing the operational, financial, and academic performance of House Schools, a network of seven schools, comprising four Trinityhouse Schools based in Gauteng and three coastal schools: Glenwood House, Greenwood Bay College, and Elkanah House.

This role provides strategic leadership and operational oversight to ensure high standards of education delivery, staff performance, student achievement, and stakeholder engagement across the network. The General Manager will work closely with the Managing Director, peers, Executive Heads, Principals, school-based administrative teams, and central support functions (including People and Culture, Finance, IT, Facilities, Compliance and Governance) to align school operations with the strategic objectives, values, and vision of House Schools.

The General Manager is accountable for driving sustainable growth, strengthening leadership capability, ensuring regulatory compliance, and ensuring a consistent and high-quality learner and parent experience across all campuses, while recognising and supporting the unique identity and positioning of each school within the group.

Output 1: Leadership & Strategy
  • Oversee the implementation of the House Schools strategy, ensuring alignment across all schools in the network.
  • Lead and support expansion initiatives, including school growth opportunities, infrastructure development and campus enhancement projects.
  • Implement strategic plans for growth, improvement, and long-term sustainability across the House Schools network.
  • Lead and support Executive Heads and Principals to ensure educational excellence, operational efficiency and consistent delivery of the House Schools value proposition.
  • Drive a culture of continuous improvement, innovation and accountability across all schools.
  • Analyse opportunities for growth within key market segments to strengthen enrolments and profitability.
  • Oversee the achievement of strategic goals by monitoring enrolments, financial performance, operational delivery and campus development priorities.
Output 2: Academic Oversight
  • Monitor academic performance metrics and initiate programmes to improve teaching quality and student outcomes across the network.
  • Ensure compliance with relevant national curriculum standards and regulatory requirements applicable to each school.
  • Support curriculum development, innovation and teacher training initiatives to strengthen academic delivery and performance.
  • Ensure that academic standards remain aligned with the House Schools vision, brand positioning and learner outcomes.
Output 3: Operational Efficiency
  • Oversee day-to-day operations across the House Schools network including academic delivery, student wellness, People and Culture, IT, facilities, health & safety and compliance.
  • Partner with IT and relevant service providers to establish and maintain efficient technology platforms and systems that enable learning and operational excellence.
  • Implement policies, procedures and programmes to ensure learner safety, wellbeing and consistent service delivery across all campuses.
  • Identify and address operational challenges, driving a culture of continuous improvement and effective problem solving.
  • Ensure optimal and cost-effective management of facilities, ensuring alignment with the positioning and standards of House Schools.
  • Oversee enrolment performance metrics and learner retention, driving strategies for continuous improvement and sustainability.
  • Provide oversight of academic and student wellness initiatives across all schools.
  • Maintain overall accountability for occupational health and safety across the network.
Output 4: Financial Management
  • Coordinate and oversee budgets for each school within the House Schools network.
  • Monitor expenditure and ensure effective and responsible use of resources across all campuses.
  • Identify funding opportunities and support fundraising initiatives where appropriate.
  • Partner with Finance to analyse, interpret and report on monthly income statements and financial performance across the schools, ensuring that financial targets are achieved and corrective actions are implemented where required.
Output 5: People and Culture
  • Provide leadership and oversight of the People and Culture agenda across the House Schools network, ensuring strong leadership capability, high performance and an engaged workforce.
  • Lead recruitment, retention and performance management of school leadership and staff, ensuring high-quality appointments aligned to House Schools values and standards.
  • Promote professional development, leadership coaching and staff wellbeing to strengthen capability and retention.
  • Foster a collaborative, inclusive and high-performance culture across the network.
  • Build and maintain an effective management team, ensuring clear accountability and role clarity across leadership structures.
  • Supervise managers and provide effective leadership and motivation to all employees in alignment with House Schools values.
  • Lead, coach and mentor Principals and HODs by supporting their professional development to maximise productivity and improve learner outcomes.
  • Recruit, engage and retain suitable employees to ensure the ongoing success and sustainability of House Schools.
  • Ensure sound employee relations are maintained, including engagement with unions and shop stewards where applicable.
  • Provide oversight and support in managing discipline and conflict resolution in the workplace, ensuring fair, consistent and legally compliant processes.
Output 7: Stakeholder Engagement
  • Build strong relationships with parents, community members, local authorities and education partners across Gauteng and coastal regions.
  • Represent House Schools at relevant public forums, community engagements and governance meetings.
  • Communicate effectively with all stakeholders to ensure transparency, trust and strong relationships.
  • Act as the escalation point for parent queries, learner discipline matters and learner achievements, ensuring appropriate resolution and reputational alignment.
