Our client is seeking a highly experienced Financial Manager to join their team based in Durban.
Purpose of the job
The Finance Manager is responsible for overseeing the full finance function, ensuring accurate financial reporting, effective controls, statutory compliance, cash flow management, and support to operational and strategic decision-making. The role includes daily transactional oversight, monthly management reporting, statutory compliance, audit coordination, and supervision of the finance team.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENT
- Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, or related field.
- Professional accounting qualification (CA(SA), CIMA, ACCA, or similar)
- Minimum of 5–8 years experience in a senior finance role.
- Project-based environment experience
- Strong financial reporting and analytical skills.
- Advanced knowledge of Pastel accounting systems.
- Solid understanding of VAT, tax, and statutory compliance.
- Excellent attention to detail and accuracy.
- Strong organisational and deadline management skills.
- Ability to supervise and mentor finance staff.
- Effective communication with management, auditors, banks, and regulators.
MAIN JOB FUNCTIONS
Daily Financial Operations
- Review, correct, and post all sales invoices.
- Maintain and update the sales order tracker for the estimating team.
- Review sales order margins and ensure correct project code allocation.
- Create, track, and close work orders.
- Monitor and track finished goods.
- Process and post sales deliveries on Pastel.
- Create and maintain project codes.
- Review and approve daily payments.
- Follow up on long outstanding debtors to ensure timely collections.
Weekly Responsibilities
- Reconcile invoicing against the sales tracker.
- Review and update outsourced wages schedules.
Monthly Financial Close & Reporting
- Post all general journals and accruals.
- Maintain and update the fixed asset register, including CAPEX additions.
- Prepare a rolling 90-day cash flow forecast.
- Prepare work-in-progress (WIP) schedules.
- Reconcile telephone and cellphone expenses.
- Review overtime schedules for accuracy and approval.
- Analyse monthly expenses and ensure correct GL account allocation.
- Review and approve VAT submissions.
- Review and approve monthly payroll.
- Review and approve 30th and 7th creditor payment runs.
- Review debtors and creditors ageing and address outstanding items.
- Post miscellaneous issues and receipts.
- Revise standard costs as required.
- Review and validate month-end stock reports.
- Prepare sales performance analysis (actual vs budget vs prior year).
- Prepare and present monthly management accounts.
- Perform balance sheet reconciliations.
- Reconcile scrap sales schedules.
Quarterly Responsibilities
- Complete the quarterly Statistics South Africa (STATSA) questionnaire accurately and submit within deadlines
Annual Responsibilities
- Post year-end journals and prepare the final Trial Balance and General Ledger.
- Supervise and reconcile the annual stock take.
- Update company SOPs in preparation for audit.
- Ensure submission of provisional tax returns.
- Lead and manage the external audit process.
- Assist with BBBEE verification.
- Review actual costs against standard costs.
- Reconcile job card pipeline reports.
- Prepare for and participate in annual bank reviews (e.g. FNB).
- Ensure timely renewal of all insurance policies.
- Analyse all accounts and post required corrections prior to audit.
- Prepare the annual budget for the new financial year.
- Negotiate and renew annual Pastel licences.
- Ensure compliance with all CIPC requirements.
- Review draft annual financial statements.
- Prepare annual tax computations.
Ad Hoc & Operational Support
- Review and complete vendor documentation.
- Review supplier and customer credit applications.
- Assist with ad hoc finance-related projects.
- Provide support for Pastel-related queries.
- Assist with dividend declaration processes, including legal and compliance formalities.
- Supervise and support the finance team.
- Facilitate director sign-off on all relevant documentation.
