A leading organisation is seeking an Electrical Engineer focused on Substations to own HV and MV Electrical design and technical execution in Johannesburg, South Africa. The ideal candidate will have 3–8 years of experience with substations, strong knowledge of power system design, and proficiency in software such as ETAP and AutoCAD. The role includes developing electrical designs, conducting system studies, and ensuring compliance with industry standards. A valid driver’s license and willingness to travel are required.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering (heavy current advantageous).
• 3–8 years’ experience in substation design, construction, or commissioning.
• Strong knowledge of power system design, protection, and control systems.
• Proficiency in software such as ETAP, DigSilent, AutoCAD, or equivalent.
• Strong understanding of IEC, SANS, Eskom, IEEE and related industry standards.
• Excellent analytical, problem-solving, communication, and coordination skills.
• Ability to manage multiple projects under tight deadlines.
• Valid driver’s licence and willingness to travel to project sites.

Responsibilities

• Develop and review electrical designs for HV/MV substations.
• Conduct system studies, load flow analysis, short-circuit calculations, and protection coordination.
• Prepare engineering drawings, single line diagrams, schematics, BOMs, and technical documentation.
• Specify and select major electrical equipment such as transformers, switchgear, cables, and protection relays.
• Ensure designs comply with IEC, SANS, NERSA, Eskom and other applicable standards.
• Provide technical support during construction and commissioning phases.
• Perform site inspections to verify installation quality.
• Review contractor and supplier technical documentation.
• Liaise with clients, consultants, and utilities.

This role is ideal for an engineer who is confident in heavy current systems, committed to quality, and able to support multidisciplinary project teams from concept through commissioning.

Key Responsibilities

• Develop and review electrical designs for HV/MV substations, including primary and secondary systems.
• Conduct system studies, load flow analysis, short-circuit calculations, and protection coordination.
• Prepare engineering drawings, single line diagrams, schematics, BOMs, and technical documentation.
• Specify and select major electrical equipment such as transformers, switchgear, cables, and protection relays.
• Ensure designs comply with IEC, SANS, NERSA, Eskom and other applicable standards.
• Provide technical support during construction, installation, FAT, SAT, and commissioning phases.
• Perform site inspections to verify installation quality and compliance with design requirements.
• Review contractor and supplier technical documentation, ensuring accuracy and compliance.
• Liaise with clients, consultants, and utilities to clarify and resolve technical matters.
