Job Function

The Contract Manager is responsible for the overall management, operational execution, and profitability of transport management services provided to Leroy Merlin South Africa. This includes all Secondary and Tertiary transportation activities within a 4PL structure. The role ensures client satisfaction, operational excellence, and sustainable business unit growth through strategic leadership, financial accountability, and continuous improvement initiatives.

Key Performance Areas:
Role Overview & Business Unit Ownership:
  • Full ownership of the business unit’s P&L, ensuring profitability and sustainable service delivery.
  • Act as the primary liaison with the client’s senior supply chain leadership for transport performance, strategy, and financial matters.
  • Develop and execute the digital roadmap for transport, implementing technology solutions to enhance efficiency and visibility.
  • Present detailed performance, financial results, and strategic initiatives to Senior Management on a regular basis.
Operational Management & Execution:
  • Lead and develop a team of planners and analysts responsible for daily transport execution.
  • Oversee successful, timely execution of:
  • B2B Deliveries (store replenishment, trade orders).
  • B2C Deliveries (direct-to-consumer, including bulk items).
  • Last Mile eCommerce Deliveries (critical for customer experience).
  • Ensure seamless integration with Fulfilment Centres, Stores, and Distribution Centres to maintain throughput and delivery schedules.
Contract, Performance, and Vendor Management:
  • Manage all Service Level Agreements (SLAs) with 3PL transport providers, ensuring performance and cost-effectiveness.
  • Oversee digital transport platforms (TMS, tracking systems, customer portals) for uptime and functionality.
  • Identify and mitigate operational and contractual risks related to transport service providers and systems.
Continuous Improvement & Project Leadership:
  • Lead strategic transport and supply chain projects (network redesigns, technology implementations).
  • Drive Continuous Improvement (CI) initiatives to reduce costs, improve service, and enhance operational efficiency.
Key Performance Indicators (KPIs):
  • Customer NPS (Delivery Component): Measure customer satisfaction on delivery experience.
  • OTIF (On-Time, In-Full): Ensure strict adherence to delivery timelines and quantity requirements.
  • Transport Recoveries (%): Optimize revenue recovery from customer-paid delivery services versus total transport costs.
Qualifications Required
  • Bachelor’s degree in supply chain management, Logistics, Business Administration, Engineering, or related field.
  • Desirable: Post-graduate qualification in Supply Chain or professional certification in Project Management
Experience and Skills Required
  • 8–10 years of progressive experience in high-volume, complex transportation and logistics management (retail, eCommerce, or 4PL/3PL environments).
  • Proven track record in managing P&L or significant financial accountability for a business unit or major contract.
  • Experience in multi-modal transport networks (Primary, Secondary, Tertiary).
  • Strong background in managing and negotiating large-scale 3PL contracts and SLAs.
  • Mandatory experience in eCommerce and Last Mile delivery excellence, including technology integration.
  • In-depth understanding of transport operations across B2B, B2C, and Last Mile channels.
  • Strong grasp of logistics technology and digital transformation strategies.
  • Familiarity with retail and eCommerce supply chain dynamics.
