COMPANY DESCRIPTION:

Our client is a commercial printing company providing indoor and outdoor printing services. They are looking for a skilled and hands-on CMT Operator to join their team as soon as possible.

JOB DESCRIPTION:

The successful applicant will assist in the production of banners, gazebos, and other promotional displays. The ideal candidate will be adept at taking printed materials and performing cutting, stitching, and finishing tasks with precision. This role is integral to ensure the products are completed to specification and delivered on time.

MAIN DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Material Fabrication: Process printed materials by accurately cutting, stitching, trimming, and assembling components such as banners, gazebos, and display structures.
  • Machine & Tool Operation: Operate sewing machines, cutting tables, heat presses, and other relevant equipment safely and efficiently.
  • Quality Control: Examine finished products for alignment, stitching quality, backings, edge finishing, and overall durability. Perform corrections or adjustments as needed.
  • Inventory & Material Handling: Maintain an organised workspace—monitor material inventory (fabrics, thread, trims, hardware), notify supervisors of low stock, and assist with material prep for printing.
  • Equipment Maintenance: Perform daily cleaning, lubrication, and minor maintenance on machines to keep them in safe, working order.
  • Collaborate with Print & Design Teams: Work closely with print operators and designers to understand specifications and ensure finished output matches design intentions.
  • Packaging & Preparation: Fold, package, label, and prepare finished items for delivery or installation, ensuring items are stored or handed off correctly.
  • Health & Safety Compliance: Adhere to all safety protocols—especially when using cutting tools, heat equipment, or handling heavy rolls of material.
  • Record-Keeping & Reporting: Log production quantities, material usage, and machine issues in daily logs or software systems for tracking purposes.
  • Support Installation Prep: Assist in organising and preparing items for on-site installation or delivery, including loading/unloading as required.

EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Matric
  • Relevant technical or vocational training in textiles or production will be an added bonus

EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS REQUIRED:

  • Proven experience in fabric or signage production environments, ideally involving cutting, stitching, and assembly.
  • Strong proficiency in using sewing machines and cutting tools—manual and electric.
  • Keen attention to detail, excellent eye for clean stitching, accurate cuts, and overall craftsmanship.
  • Good hand-eye coordination and physical ability to manage materials (often bulky or heavy).
  • Basic understanding of print materials, adhesives, and fabric properties.
  • Familiarity with production workflows and safe machine operation.
  • Ability to work well in a team, but also take initiative when working independently.
  • Strong organizational skills and time management to meet production deadlines.
  • Previous experience in signage, banner, textile, or display fabrication (beneficial).
  • Understanding of quality standards in promotional materials like waterproofing, weather resistance, and UV-safe stitching practices (beneficial).
  • Hands-on, detail-oriented, and methodical.
  • Patient and quality-driven—committed to neat, durable finishes.
  • Responsible, punctual, and able to work under pressure.
  • Safety-conscious and aware of ergonomics.
  • Adaptable and open to learning new techniques or processes.
